Looking back on the 1998/1999 Year:
The 1998/1999 club year would have to be the best in the entire record of the club. This was the year that saw the top prize in the Ngawi Big Three contest go for the first year since the contest started.
Ngawi Sports Fishing Club member Des King, who resides in Wanganui, caught a 317' 1kg Mako Shark, to take out the top prize.
Club member Fred Southerwood, who resides in Kapiti, was runnerup in the Wellington Regional Top Angler award just 0' 03 of a point behind the winner.
It was also the year that saw Chris Robinson, win the top Tuna prize, with a 89kg Yellow Fin at the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament.
Two anglers, Pam Ritchie from Upper Hutt and Leo Rayner from Carterton were 1st and 2nd in the Nationals contest. This contest is one which is fished within our own waters, but competition is from all over New Zealand.
Another club member Ray Wylie caught the heaviest Marlin, setting a new New Zealand record with a 417' 0kg Black Marlin caught in the Bay of Islands.
