While some people may think the world is flat, our oceans and seas are not!

Altimetry, commonly known as Sea Surface Height (SSH), shows that sea levels vary (maximum -2m/+2m) depending on the temperature of the water, and this difference is measured between the Mean Sea Level and the current observed level.

What does this mean to us fisher folk? Positive altimetry (SSH>0m) indicates bumps where the water column is warmer, while negative altimetry (SSH<0m) indicates holes, where the water column is cooler, just like high and low air pressure zones shown on the 6pm news.

Pelagic species prefer warmer zones, while nutrients are found in cold water zones, where plankton tend to congregate, which generates the feeding cycle of baitfish, so frontal zones are created where the predatory species congregate to feed where these areas abut.

Combine this with Current, SST and Chlorophyll data, you will have the best available data available on your MFD.
