Lion Red Snapper Classic
The Lion Red Snapper classic provided the heaviest snapper ever caught in the 27 years of the competition at 90 Mile Beach recently. The 9.315kg snapper was caught by Tauranga surfcaster, Vaughan Craven and took him about about 20 minutes to land.
The snapper was caught on the last day of the five-day contest and landed Mr Craven a $50,000 cash prize for overall heaviest fish as well as a $3000 daily first prize.
His four-man team were also overall team event winners of $4500 and laptop computers. The annual Far North event is the biggest beach surfcasting contest of its kind in the world.
