Latest Reports - Hauraki Gulf

Finally a reasonable forecast for the weekend for most of the country. The Hauraki Gulf is alive and the fishing is HOT. The place to be for work-ups is in the 40-50m depth range wide of flat rock and further south into the Firth.

Here's Damo's tips for the weekend. He's out there today and they're getting some nice snapper up to about 60cm.

  • About 10nm Nth of Gannet Rock
  • 3-5nm NE of the Noises
  • On the Tiri/Kawau line - lots of bait with kings and snapper in attendance
  • Area between Anchorite and Cape Colville
  • The area between Motuora and Kawau is holding a lot of bait

Hauraki Hotspot Tip: If you don't want to venture too far then about 1km NE of Rangi light which is the beginning of the worm bed area and on the incoming tide is a good option for the weekend.

For all the help and advice you need on where and when to fish check out our DB Export Fishing reports and our Bite Times for your favourite spots are here. Mornings look like the best bite for the weekend.

Wellington Fishing Report

There's been some good gurnard and snapper fishing along the coast and the blue cod are on the bite on the South coast. Wellington Harbour is full of bait and there are plenty of kahawai about along with solid trevally up to about 3kg. There’s been some good snapper on the West Coast particularly north of Kapiti Island and plenty of big gurnard. Cook Straight has plenty of bass and hapuku for the taking right now. A few elephant fish have been caught up around the east coast bays and Palliser Bay in particular. Fresh mussels or small strips of squid are best. The latest from the team at Steve’s Fishing Shop is here. Check out the Wellington boat fishing thread in our forums here
