'King Hit' for Olivia

Eleven-year-old diver, Olivia Wadman, nailed a 43lb kingfish with her first ever shot with a spear gun at Houhora Heads last Friday. Her father, Roscoe, said that while Olivia had been swimming beside him for a couple of years while he spearfished, it was the first time he had put a speargun in her hands.
The pair were swimming in 10ft deep water just out from the heads when they came upon a school of about 15-20 kingfish. Olivia took up the tale saying, she went for the closest one.
"I fired. I got it. Dad missed his one. Dad killed my one. We have eaten it. It was very nice."
Roscoe admitted he was shown up by the marksmanship from his young apprentice. "She was a gun shot... First time first shot, and dad missed."
Later Roscoe told how he speared another one but didn't notice a big shark coming up behind him to check the kill out. He heard Olivia screaming at him through her mask and whipped around but the shark had taken off.
This time of the year they are always patrolling the shoreline," said Roscoe. He was referring to the kingfish. No doubt, there are sharks around too. The Wadmans are formerly of Houhora, but recently moved to Kerikeri.
