Is Sand the New Lead?

The new solution to a lead-free sport will raise a few eyebrows within the industry as it is far removed from many of the lead substitutes currently being developed by companies within the trade. It is based on one of the most readily available substances known to man – sand.

Ockert, the Germany-based OEM and owner of brands that include Sportex rods and Climax fishing lines, is marketing SUNA (Smart Unlimited Natural Angling) following its development by a fellow countryman. The company’s MD, Jan Willenbruch, said the industry can expect a lead ban very soon in the EU, and other countries across the globe are also considering similar restrictions.

“For many applications in fishing SUNA is not only the way out of lead before it gets banned – it can significantly increase your catch rate when boosted by flavours and other attractants.,” he said
“The composite is purely natural and full of proteins. Sand is a heavy natural resource that is very solid, hard, and can be moulded to form any shape needed for fishing. Its potential is endless.

“It is a non-toxic composite, practically edible and safe for humans, fish and water. It is also 100% environmentally friendly. It completely dissolves after 48 to 72 hours if it is lost in the water. The product can also be used endless times as it completely dries once it is out of the water.

“SUNA offers decisive advantages over traditional products made from lead, brass or other materials as it can be used with attractants. The patented composite we are using is basically protein – a natural attractant itself – and can be enriched by flavours, colours and other components that start to bleed out when used in water. In addition to colour, shape, noise and movement, a SUNA product adds an extra dimension by deceiving fish and substantially improving your catch rate.

“Unlike many alternatives currently on the market, it is more cost-effective than tungsten or brass. One thing they have in common is that they are raw materials that require a lot of energy in the manufacture – procedures that include melting, pressure and CNC cutting – and they create their own environmental footprint that is still a threat to nature and fish. SUNA products have none of that.” Willenbruch added that SUNA products are currently being made in Germany but pointed out the licencing opportunities for OEM and B2B businesses across the globe.

“Wherever there is sand, companies can produce products in their home market. It is easy to set up a manufacturing facility as it only needs simple tooling to shape almost everything, including sinkers, lures, jigs, feeder cages and many more. We are looking for the right partners worldwide who produce lures and terminal tackle in their own countries. The product is being released at the international tackle trade show – ICAST, in Orlando, Florida, this week after a three-year Covid-induced hiatus.
