HydroBrake 3500 Review

When you’re towing a big offshore rig, you need confidence that your brakes will perform every time. The HydroBrake 3500 is a new electric-over-hydraulic braking system built for trailers up to 3,500kg GVM – giving fishos a safer, smarter way to stop.

Most electric-over-hydraulic systems in New Zealand still use the old 7-pin plug and a bulky box full of parts – a large battery, brake controller, charger, actuator and breakaway unit. It works, but it’s fiddly. The main battery has to be charged before every trip, and if it runs flat on a long haul, your brakes can fade or fail.

HydroBrake 3500 changes all that. Built around the modern 12-pin plug, already standard on vehicles like the Ford Ranger, it draws power and braking signals directly from the tow vehicle. That means fewer components, cleaner installs, and no dependence on a big battery for everyday braking.

A small onboard battery still powers the legal breakaway system, which automatically applies the brakes if the trailer ever disconnects. The clever part? The 12-pin setup trickle-charges that battery as you drive, so it’s always ready.

Control proportional braking directly from your smartphone.

HydroBrake 3500 also adds smart tech that makes towing even easier. The mobile app gives you proportional braking control straight from your phone plus self-diagnostics that flag issues before they become problems – even detecting water ingress in the hydraulic fluid after launching or recovery. It’s intuitive, quick to pair, and takes the guesswork out of towing.

With water-resistant components that don’t need a bulky box and seamless integration with in-dash tow-vehicle controls, HydroBrake 3500 is the system for fishos who tow heavy and expect their kit to just work. The extra power from the 12-pin connection can even run accessories like an electric winch directly from the vehicle.

Already proven in Australia, HydroBrake 3500 is the future of trailer braking, and it’s now available here. If you’re running a serious trailer boat and want safer stops, smarter control, and gear that’s genuinely built for how Kiwis fish, this is the system to look at.
