Why should we talk about our fishing future?

Over one million of us Kiwis love our fishing. We go fishing for all sorts of reasons and we want to be able to keep fishing for those same reasons. Yet we cannot take for granted that the future will be the same. Watch the video scribe for more.

World context

Lots of us have heard about the challenges being faced by recreational fishers around the world with diminishing catches and increasing restrictions on the places to go fishing. Aussies, Canadians and American fishers for example are all dealing with increased marine protection in their waters that lock them out of fishing opportunities.

These restrictions could happen in NZ. We don’t need to wait until they do and then rush around to fight them. Instead we can proactively get organised now.  Why not learn from the experiences of other countries? President of the International Game Fishing Association, Rob Kramer points out that Kiwi’s stepping up to chart a new path for their fishing future is not only good for Kiwi fishers, it is good for all fishing tourists.  And we know fishing tourism is good for the NZ economy. Everything is on the table

FISHinFuture Search can be described as “dialling back to zero” with a clean sheet for ideas to best chart a new path for our fishing future. All ideas are welcome to the website. Post your thoughts here. Your ideas will be displayed at the FISHinFuture Search event to inform and inspire the participants.

What about licensing?

EVERYTHING is on the table.  Participants will debate the merits of all kinds of ways of raising revenue for maintaining our recreational fishing freedom.

Who is going to be at the event?

Around 70 people from around New Zealand and from all walks of life and fishing will be at the FISHinFuture Search event.

Inter-generational wisdom

Youth fishers form 12% of the participants at FISHinFuture Search.
It is expected that the inter-generational dialogue will lead to some creative ideas for our fishing future.

Who is paying for the event?

There are a wide range of fabulous sponsors stepping up to fund this event.  FISHinFuture Search is being run by Kiwis for Kiwis. The only motive is to identify a more secure future for our recreational fishing than the one we can see today.

What happens after the event?
