Fishers Take to the Road

Members of the Recreational Fishing Council will take to the road to awaken the “sleeping giant” represented by the million or so recreational fishers with an interest in New Zealand coastal fisheries.

“We are constructively engaged with the Government in seeking to get legislative protection for the right of all recreational fishers to have their right defined, and an adequate share of the inshore fishery,” said the President of the Council, Mr. Ross Gildon.

“Our aim is both formal protection of the right, and future protection of the coastal fishery to ensure there is an ongoing reasonable chance of catching a fish. We are targeting all rec fishers to join us in this dialogue. Members of the Council will take to the roads during the next twelve months to visit every fishing club and association in the country” he said.

“Our newly elected board of management is committed to make sure that our Council continues to represent the views of the public that were determined from the Soundings process.' he said. “Funding remains our major problem and we hope that clubs and associations will come in behind us to support the voice we are giving to their opinions.”
