An excellent result and we achieved what we wanted to do by winning the Interclub Billfish and fourth overall is very good for us as anglers fishing for blue marlin do not use light line.

Eight days of fishing was enjoyed due to incredible weather conditions and no rest for anyone!

Another new trophy has kindly been donated by Mick Brown and named the Bugger All Trophy. It is for the skipper of the boat which fails to score any points for the club during the week of the Nationals. This caused some concern as the week continued as many of our boats were not lucky enough to catch a fish. In fact there were a massive 29 of the 57 boats who scored no points. At the prize giving a committee of five (who wish to remain anonymous!) were made up from the skippers of the boats who had scored points for the club. They went off into seclusion to select five of the contenders to go onto a short list who were then invited to speak and try and excuse themselves. These speeches were a great success especially that given by Rob Morris who declared he would like to have the trophy to put into the cabinet he didn’t have, it was a cake walk and the only thing he had ever had a chance of winning!

The short listed skippers were Ariki Tai - Eric McIver, Zambucca - Darky Douglas, Reel Hooka – Ian Cameron, Rob Morris – Raykar, Tony De Costa – Shearwater.

After they had all made an attempt at speaking, the committee announced their decision. Eric was asked to step forward and informed he couldn’t catch fish and couldn’t make a speech and was, in fact, so useless he couldn’t even win the Bugger All Trophy!!

The trophy was then duly awarded to Raykar who delighted everyone with his speaking skills if not his fishing skills. No doubt the tag pole will be the first thing to go on the boat at Nationals time next year!

Thank you Mick for the trophy and thank you Rob for entering into the spirit of the award.

The raffles were won by Mike Douthett and Darky Douglas. Darky won the bottle drawn at the prize giving and donated it back to the club to be auctioned, a very generous gesture. Sid Carter was

appointed auctioneer and Rachael Humphrey did a great job of exhibiting the item being auctioned. The bidding was extremely lively and very entertaining! The highest bidder was Shannon Chambers of the Grey Ghosters – congratulations and thank you Shannon!

A sweep stake was run with the pool of $1400 divided between Bushwacka (heaviest marlin) and Reel Hooka (heaviest tuna). The line weight restrictions, which apply to the Nationals do not apply to the sweep stake.

Once again Julia and Molly did an awesome job from the Coastguard caravan which was stationed across from the Lodge, overlooking the boat ramp. They took a record number of calls (3200) from a record number of boats – over 160 different boats. Their professionalism and friendliness was admired by many of our visiting boaties and of course the regulars. They were both presented with bouquets and a couple of small faux pas they made during the week were shared. One day Julia was seen to respond to a call by saying ‘Waihau Bay receiving’ into her hand! (she had got so used holding the hand piece …). Molly gaily announced one morning ‘ Waihau Bay Ghost Card receiving!’

Their efforts were truly appreciated. Thanks again Julia and Molly.

Waihau Bay had 193 anglers fishing the Nationals from 57 boats – a record for us and many more than any other club in the country. The number of participating clubs was 39. Total number of teams nationwide was 379 with 1325 anglers.

Thanks heaps to all of you who came and fished for the Nationals, whether or not you were successful, it was a pleasure having you all here.

SOFTBAIT FISHING WITH LIGHT TACKLE SUPER BRAID LINES

Caution – Anglers belonging to NZBGFC affiliated clubs please be aware that the light tackle super braid lines being used in conjunction with soft bait fishing will over test by at least 100% of the rated line weight, in some instances they will over test by more than 3 times the rated line weight.

Braid lines are extremely difficult to test, there are very few line testing machines in NZ that can successfully test braid line.

It is up to individual clubs whether or not they accept braid lines. To claim any NZBGFC or IGFA record al line must comply with strict regulations.

Another issue related to the use of braid lines is the connection to any backing material. Line backing is clearly defined in the Game Council and IGFA rules.

1. Backing not attached to the fishing line is permissible with no restrictions as to size or material.
2. If the fishing line is attached to the backing, the catch shall be classified under the heavier of the two lines. The backing may not exceed the 130lb (60kg) line class and must be of a type of line approved for use in these angling rules.

WHITE POINTER BOATS COMPETITION

The club is hosting the inaugural White Pointer Boats competition . Fishing is over three days being March 22^nd, 23^rd and 24^th. A good level of interest has been received by White Pointer who are running the event with the committee supplying weigh masters and running the bar. Milby will once again be doing the catering.
