Champion Snapper Angler for DB Export Comp

Winner of the DB Export Competition snapper section Andrew Hill has never been afraid to do the hard yards when it comes to chasing big fish.

He landed the trophy snapper after towing his PWC all the way from Auckland to the top of the North Island to fish the remote but very productive grounds there.

Fishing with son Jayden, they ventured to Cape Reinga where they were soft-baiting in 45 metres of water when the 90.5cm snapper nailed his Gulp! 10’ Eel. It took the Auckland based angler around seven minutes to land the fish, which he kept and has had mounted. The snapper weighed 13.85kg, just over the magic 30-pound mark (30.88lb) and was caught on a Daiwa Saltist 3000 rod and reel combo.

Andrew was ecstatic with the catch and admitted to being more than a little nervous about retaining his lead as the comp drew to a close.

He was probably the only person in the country who welcomed the Covid-19 lockdown that was invoked a few days before the event’s end, effectively closing the contest early.
