Catch Recorders Corner November 2001

   Some good catches have been achieved since the last newsletter, and the club’s first tournament has taken place.  Father and son team Rod and Ricky Goodlet have weighed in a number of snapper from their boat, aptly named “R & R”.  

On September 29^th “McGint”had a very good day with skipper Phil Hally catching a 28.7kg hapuka on 10kg.  They also caught another hapuka and the icing on the cake was a 9.085kg (20lb) snapper caught by Ryan Swart.

On October 21^st Muzz Bennett ran the Fish ‘N’ Golf Tournament.  It was postponed for a day due to weather and sea conditions.  The decision was a wise one as the Sunday was calm.  The best snapper were 4.615kg and 4.16kg caught by Shanae O’Hara and Thomas Menefy.  The “biggest” kahawai was a 0.725kg fish caught by Paul McKeown.

One the same day “Wairana IV” headed out wide and Brian Tidmarsh gained a pin and club record with an 86.7kg thresher shark on 24kg.  The only thresher weighed previously by a male angler was in 1989 when Dennis McDonald caught a 53.5kg fish also on 24kg.  Two threshers have been weighed in by women.  In 1964 Helen Moyes caught a 179.5kg monster and in 1995 Shirley Fisher caught one weighing 73.6kg.

Hopefully some notable catches will be made on November 24^th when the Club runs the Snapper, Kingfish, Hapuka & Trevally Tournament.
