Canterbury Shellfish Ban Lifted

Parts of the coastline between Birdlings Flat, south of Banks Peninsula, and Kaikoura had been closed since September due to high levels of marine biotoxin found in shellfish.

A Community and Public Health spokesperson says the biotoxin is now within safe levels, so warning signs have been taken down from around the coastline.

However, signs will remain in place around the Avon - Heathcote estuary and Sumner Beach because of a risk of bacterial contamination in shellfish
