And from the locals who know… best baits at that time of year for surfcasting are 'squilchards'. The pilchard is inserted into the body cavity of the squid (sounds nasty) and the whole lot heaved out beyond the breakers. The pilchard oozes the normal smells and oils snapper find particularly yummy and the squid helps keep the whole thing on the hook.
