1389lb Black Marlin!!!

A phenomenal 1389lb black marlin was caught and weighed in Cairns, Australia on the 8/11/01. This was the third heaviest black marlin ever taken from Cairns.

The information available at this point is limited, but we can report that the fish was hooked in the jaw at the no.5 Ribbon Reef and the fight time was a remarkable 17 minutes. The angler was IGFA rep from Sydney Jason Caughlan.

By all accounts it has been an amazing season for giant black marlin on the Great Barrier Reef, with mid October providing one of the hottest bites ever recorded. Huge spawning female blacks have been recorded from all the big name reefs, in significant numbers, with many bettering the 1,000lb mark.

The Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic held between the 21st and 27th of October was one of the most sucessful ever, with 69 fish recorded from 14 boats. Only three fish were weighed in with the rest being released. All three went over 1,000lb and the winning fish was another monster at 1,278lb taken onboard Calypso.

The good news is that the season isn't over yet!
