The Back Beach Boat Ramp is located in the Port Chalmers area beside Otago Port, a 20-minute drive outside Dunedin. It is a safe and sheltered launching spot with a dual-access concrete boat ramp and pontoons. The pontoons are for shared commercial and recreational use, and should only be used for launching and retrieving. There is an Otago Harbour Boating Guide at the ramp. The area is strongly tidal and boaties should be vigilant around the deep shipping lanes.
There is good parking available at this ramp.
There are public toilets and recycling bins. Back Beach is also a great spot for swimming, fishing and picnics. A ferry goes between Back Beach and Portobello Wharf. There are lots of shops and cafes available in Port Chalmers.
