I'm in the process of refurbing some old rayglass fibreglass trailer guards. They are currently gelcoated rayglass white. I want to redo them in a black gelcoat, what product do I need. I've asked a couple of suppliers but haven't got a reasonable answer.

From my understanding for gelcoat to cure outside of a mold I would have to add wax to it or use flowcoat is that correct? Which product would be best to use?

Product I am looking at is this: https://nzfg.co.nz/product/black-gelcoat/

I've never done more than just touch ups with a gelcoat touch up kit so any advice on doing the larger area would be greatly appreciated.

First thing you need to find out is which resin are they made from, polyester or epoxy.

Polyester gel coat like the one in your link won’t stick to epoxy.

If the guards are in good shape and the gel coat has only gone chalky, you can normally sand it back with 1000 grit wet and dry, then cut and polish the colour back up. You will need to do this if you re-gel coat them as well.

If the guards are ok and you just want to change the colour, just paint them with a good epoxy enamel.

I had to make some mojlds for a project a work. I went into NZF and talked directly with them. They were really helpful. I suggest calling in there and having a yarn. Might be more productive than a phone call. Especially if you can take the trailer with you. Their advise was bang on.
