Thought I may as well post it here. I've recently designed a big game chair for the beach (Using my Jeep). I've seen Aussie LB Shark fisherman using fridges with steel cages around the bottom, looked kind of mad bill and not right, so I had a think about it for a while and came up with the following. I made them on my PC using the trusty 'ole Microsoft paint. lol

I think the scale seems about right. Should be built in about 1-2 weeks or as time allows, my cousin is in the steel business and is helping me with all the steel work, so good prices & quality work. My main goal for this chair is HEAVY DUTY. I Can't wait to get out there and give it some death!!

It was built to house my Tiagra-130A bent butt chair rod and Kiwell 60kg INT with IGFA Nylon (130lb/60kg). I'm happy with it. Smile

First photo is what it looks like, second is what everything is and the third is a birds-eye........

LMAO!! LOL

Thanks lads.....after looking at it I noticed a few mistakes, the seat back should be further away from the steel back to allow the seat to swivel, I put it too close in the picture.

Also, the 1 piece steel seat would only have to be about 1" and I could possibly get away with 3/4" as a 1-1/2" slab of steel is heavy stuff and although more weight is good for sturdiness it also puts plenty of pressure on the chassis rails and surrounding area.

Here is what one Aussies best land base shark fisherman uses, the fridge set up....if I hooked into something huge I know I'd rather have a Jeep behind me than a 100kg fridge. Still, it does the trick, I just wanted something that was easy to set up and more importantly easy to travel with. Wink

I remember Roddy thinking a game chair mounted in the back of a Jeep would be good for Ascension  (there have been Land Based Game fishermen spooled with ease when using 50W and, I think, 80  boat gear on the rocks)

this would be more exciting, especially if you aren't sure about the quality of your welds to the chassis and whether the Jeep's steel bumper is well attached (water-skiing with a steel bumper attached to your backside - now there's a new sport !)

and if you get tired pumping or winching, you just "sunset" the drag and ask someone to drive you inland a few hunded yards  grin !

I'm really after the large stuff. I'll be baiting stingrays so stand up is not an option for me. The Jeep is tough enough and I would make sure the quality of the work is A+ (I never do things by halves) if I wasn't sure I wouldn't use it. Smile I do have stand up set up as well as part of my "spare mates" gear....TLD 50 80lb etc......

thanks for the input guys. Clap

Last year I saw a documentary in Aussie about these guys who had set themselves up for shark fishing around the Newcastle area.

They were fishing off a beach similar to Muriwai and had built a proper game chair onto the bullbar of a flattop Landcruiser, it was mounted quite high and gave them height and line clearance.

The system was, they were targeting juvenile Great Whites and tagging them, it was said to be a breeding or area these particular fish held at certain times, they invited a journalist along to see their operation and it was professionally filmed for TV, they even gave the TV crew a shot when they hooked one.

They had tagged around ten of these Whites to date with other species being caught also.

The best part was their bait setting method, it involved on of the boys taking the mullet bait out on a surfbourd to set it, seemed to me a pretty scary method but it was the way they did it all the time, they caught a couple seemingly on demand and it was a brilliant bit of TV for a fill in.

These big fish around 10 - 14 ft really gave them a workout and the setup of the gamechair had seemingly been a well thought out, or a system that had come about from evolution of their fishing requirements.

It looked like a first class mounting job with a substantial chair as would be needed to land these large fish, I suggest if you wanted more info you might contact fishing clubs around Newcastle as Im sure these guys would be well known in the area.

I think any thing you build would need to be tough enough for the BIG ONE.

Regards, Rob.

Bloody brilliant design there DBDRFT.

All you left off were the drink holders for those DB big bottles

Is using a Jeep IGFA legal?

What size baits do you intend using DBDRFT?

Big bottles require big baits?

Thanks Finatic. Smile Not bad for a 24 year old huh! I could be out in my Honda, pants near showing arse crack, hat backwards talking smack.....

Stingray, 3 Kahawai wrapped as one using 3 to 4 big cable zip ties to secure them in place going over the trace as well making it compact and durable. Any large sized fish really will work. When targeting sharks it's not so much what you use but how big it is that determines the possible target species, a 80lb blue wouldn't take a 30lb stingray bait and chances are a big Mako wouldn't take a single Kahawai bait though anything is possible. Tongue

Also, in the photo the Jeeps tailgate lifts up and acts as a roof for my chair.

How do you get your baits out into the zone DBDRFT? and also would you use a float to suspend it near the surface or fish the bait on the bottom?

2 or 3 ballons inside a rubbish bag or just balloons them self. I like a good offshore but nothing to wild, 25-30knots is perfect in my opinion, with the bigger game reels on the market sending a bait out 600+ metres is easily achievable while still leaving 400 metres fighting line, depends where you go to, where I go there are deep shelves right in close so I really only need to send the baits out 200-300 metres, but I guess the further you go out the deeper and wider the range., I'm no pro though just love this style of fishing so what I say isn't the only way. Big smile

I've seen these new snap floats made by Aqua Gem. Your line slides through both ends and you "break" the float into 2 and place rubber bands to hold it in this position, when the fish strikes the float snaps closed and is now free sliding on your main line, easy to fish and environmentally friendly. I'm not sure yet as they are small (3x13") and I just can't see them pulling out 10kg+ baits, 1 Kahawai, yes, but anything else...not sure?

Depending I'll throw on some 10-15 ounce sinkers to stabilize the rig and keep everything nicely in place. My traces are about 25ft-30ft, I yank the rod/line and have the bag/balloons pull off there-for dropping my bait to the sea bed.

Finatic - True, I'll have to make a beer holder, I was thinking of putting on on the jeeps tailgate tyre area as when it's open it's right next to me.

Cheers,
Carl

actually a small kayak would do the trick I recon if required. The right wind and a kite set up could do as well I recon.

I think there's a small kite rig you could use to send the baits out. Not that familiar with kite fishing but looked at something for this kind of thing a while back and I think you can release it from rod and line once out there - someone may be able to confirm this.  You'd be able to fish a bigger range of wind speeds. Now I've got the means to get the spots, I'm hoping to have a crack at some sharks from the beach out from Parengarenga in the far north in Feb. Picking up some useful info, cheers. How's night fishing for them compared to day? Great idea by the wayCool

Thanks JW Smile Night fishing is the only way to go.

Different sharks like different tides, for example the Bronze tends to strike 30 minutes before, during & 30 minutes after low tide, the Tiger shark however strikes 30 each side of the high and this has been confirmed by one of Australias best LBG Shark fisherman, Doug (we keep in contact). This is the small window you get to fish them, Doug is the man at shark fishing and landed a 300kg Tiger last Wednesday.

Also, 1 week either side and during the new moon is one of the greatest pieces of advice I can give you......this is the "action" period.

The ideal fishing conditions would be A New moon period - If low tide is at 11pm, pull up at a beach 7-8pm and fish the change of light and make sure you're gear is in place for the low tide. Fish the low for Bronze sharks then fish through the night and fish the incoming tide along with the change of light for Tigers, you rarely hear of good sized catches been taken during sunlight hours, if possible always fish the change of light and during the night.

Distance wise, distance means nothing, always fish the ledges. If you can read a beach it's the colour change in the water, light blue then dark blue lines this is the current and ledge area, go about 20-50 metres past this point and drop the bait. If the ledge is 500 out, drop it 520, if the ledge is 200 out drop it 220 and so on. No need to drop your bait at the horizon every time you go out, fish the ledge or the "fish highway".

Hope this helps and thanks for the kudos.

Cheers,
Carl
