Greg, the jitter bugs were the go yesterday, despite my faux pas while explaining to Monty that they were all I used all day, I probably could have worded it better when I said to Monty (referring to my Jitterbugs)"Mate I have been in this corner all day next to Ledeine and have not had a soft on all day.." Sort of came out all wrong if ya know what I mean....Embarrassed.

Hey Damo was wondering if you could point something out to me, i have been using the Black Magic C Point hooks with 30lb trace on a ledger rig, now i take my Ledger loop from the back of the hook through the eye down over the point then pull tight, twice now in the last few sessions the hook has tore through the trace should i bring it right up over the eye or should it be left on the shaft under the eye, it happend last time on diversity so i changed to 80lb leader which was fine but it happend again on saturday when a big fish hit my bait, i would not have said i was in deep enough water to be fishing any heavier than 30lb trace so didnt want to put anything heavier on.

Cheers Marco

mmmm....firstly put the ledger loop through the inside of the hook (the hook should hang a little towards the main branch of the ledger when held up and it kind of "spring loads" the hook which is great if they are biting softly or sucking baits)

Secondly, is your leader pulling through the gap between the shaft and the end of the eye of the hook? If so then upsize the leader...its too thin. If its breaking off here chances are the leader is rubbing on the end of the eye and wearing through. hard to say without seeing it really.

I tend to run Black Magic 60lb supple trace during the summer bumping it up to 80lb if working in close and for the deeper winter work we do. 80lb for kingfish over flat foul and 100lb for most other reefs. 120-130lb for shallow puka and deep kings and 200lb for deepwater (200m) puka, bass, kings

Hi Damo thanks for the reply so are you saying thread the loop through the front of the hook or do you come from the back through to the front ???

The leader looked torn straight in half at the end of the ledger loop so i would now think it is rubbing of the eye where there is no join and cutting through when it gets solid pressure from a big fish. I think i will up the strength of my leader then and see if that makes a difference i usually only ever go from 30lb to around 40lb as i felt this would be enough for Snapper fishing  just need to make sure i am rigging the hook the right way.

And anybody reading this post i am in no way Knocking Black magic  C Point hooks i have hooked up more consistently since i started using them.

Thanks again Damo looking forward to my next outing on Diversity on the 24th

I prefer this hook for the dropper

and put the hook through this way(twists dont seem to make much difference with 60lb but would stiffen up a 30-40lb leader)

Do you have to find the fish when you are between tiri and kawau? or when you put the berley out do you find the fish just come naturally. I tend to find never see much on the sounder except for the odd bait school in that line unless there is a work up

Work ups are the obvious signpost mate but not always there...some get a bit lost without them.

The bait schools are shadowed by the snapper normally so they are always worth a look and if that doesn't work on the drift then get up current and anchor (quietly) and burley up.

This is what the crew are doing today and the tally about 1/2 an hour ago was 85 snapper to 5kg or soSmile

not too bad on a breezy day like today with pretty much the place to ourselvesThumbs Up

Great to hear, def onto a winner with that boat. Never standpoints. Thanks for that will try that tomorrow. I am one of those people that get very lost without a work up haha.

try about 2-2.5 miles north of the Tiri Channel then...the contour line looks all "squiggly" on the chart....its loaded there. Anchored and burelyed up cos of the wind but the are in general is pretty well stocked.

Thanks for the diagrams Damo but trying to get the "twistees" on the dropper to stay in place is
driving me crazy. Spent about 45 mins today trying to get them to hold but as soon as the dropper was pulled up on the hook the bloody twists unravelled no matter what.

What am I doing wrong or was this something originally posted on 1st. April ?

Love that last video Damo. I can see future charter skippers are going to have to spend a bit of time with Peter Jackson and the Weta Team to ensure their camera operation skills are up to the job. It was like an episode of LOTR with the number of scaley monsters getting stabbed in the brain, excellent work Capt. Chris. Clap
