Fishing the Hauraki Gulf for BIG snapper

10 September 2008

What’s the first question one fisherman asks another who is boasting about his latest success. “Whereabouts were you?”

Today GPS marks enable us to revisit those special fishing spots time and time again and hopefully repeat those past performances.

But there also the element of local knowledge and knowing how each spot fishes. Does it perform better on an incoming tide or an outgoing, which way does the current run (it’s always better to have wind and tide in the same direction). Understanding the bottom structure is important as you can be right on the marks but you might as well have stayed home and mowed the lawns if your baits are well away from the fish. Currents and tides are critical in the delivery of the bait to the areas that are holding fish.

There’s few people that could claim to know the Hauraki Gulf better than Eric Morman. Eric has been fishing the Gulf for over 50 years and knows it like the back of his hand. The inventor of “Lethal jigging lures”, Eric’s recent CD is literally a goldmine of information and provides GPS marks for many of his favourite spots in and around the gulf with details of how to fish them. Maps, colour-coded for depth, pinpoint each GPS mark and also show tidal flows so it’s all the information you need.

The spots cover popular areas like the outer Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto to Tiritiri, Motuihe to Ahaaha’s and the Firth of Thames.

There’s hundred of hours gone into compiling the CD and it also includes some interesting photo’s and video footage.

Eric has a couple of 30lb snapper to his credit and has lost count of the number over 20lb he has caught. He knows what he’s talking about and this is definitely a must have.
