Spearfishing World Championships in Brazil

Every two years, the top spearfishers from all four corners of the globe pit themselves against one another at the CMAS Spearfishing World Championships, seeking to claim the title of being the world’s greatest spearo.

I was lucky enough to be on hand to document the 2023 iteration for the TV series I produce, South Seas Spearo. The Championships that year were held in Laredo, northern Spain, and saw Kiwi diver Alex Edwards pipped for gold in the women’s open by local diver Magdalena Sart Bonnin. Whilst it was agonising seeing Alex miss out on the top spot by just a few measly grams, her amazing effort earned New Zealand its first ever podium finish at the Worlds.
