Fishing in Auckland City

Summertime snapper are on the move, bringing the action back to our very doorsteps. Instead of spending hours scrolling through ‘Fakebook’ for secret spots, inside intel, or racing to the horizon during these summer holidays, many cunning old salt anglers know that snapper have already made their annual pilgrimage to New Zealand’s inshore waters. These wise anglers fish their feet first and do so successfully. Our Pagrus auratus, or tāmure, breed in shallower waters, residing for a while much closer to shore than many of their usual winter hangouts and habitats. Despite the increased hustle and bustle of human summer activity out on the water, the snapper swim under the radar, continuing their lifecycle right under our noses.

Snapper often congregate in harbours and along shallow shorelines in large numbers in summer.
