How to Catch Sea-run Trout

New Zealand possesses a diverse range of trout fishing destinations. Over a lifetime, each angler will head north, east, south and west, scouting the worth of many of the various options. Eventually though, as the years pass, the exploratory searches diminish, and most anglers return regularly to just a few locations because those places tick all the fishing satisfaction boxes. These selective fishing decisions may be because of trout quality or quantity, brown or rainbow dominance, the fishing experiences provided, the techniques used, or it might be the uniqueness and beauty of the places themselves.

For me, one such special location is the coastal stretch from Christchurch to Southland. The main target species I hunt there are sea-run and estuary brown trout. Each individual visit could involve fishing a coastal lake, a small or large estuary, a long lagoon, or a rivermouth.
