Has anyone got any info on winter Albies around Mayor/Aldermans? I have herd of guys getting big albies out of TGA last year during winter but it seems to be a slim few out chasing them?

Dave, I was talking to Mark Armstead (Extreme Sportfishing Charters) the other day and he had heard of somebody seeing some on the Penguin Rises a couple of weeks ago, although none were caught.

Anyone heard much on the Swords? We have done a few nights lately but not a bite. Went out to 1000m Sat night, Fu*ken froze

Were out on the northern end of Mayor on Saturday for a Puka drop, came across a couple of work ups of Albies, couldnt hook one for trying mind you abit hard when all the game gear is back home, but yep they sure are there.

It looks like the albies are around from what people are saying but are they the small coke bottle size models?
Do we need to wait another few weeks for the big 15k+ models to turn up or are they around too?
Looking at heading down in the next few weeks and having a crack behind mayor as well on 4-10kg outfits

Research done by Niwi for the albacore troll fishery showed

best day length 9-11hrs then tapering of, then increasing again with day lengths of between 13-15hrs.

wont be long now, I will be going out for a look at the 60mile grounds and see what's about, from the talk in the club the 500m line would be well worth the effort.
Seems the coms boys are doing rather well

Ive just been down at Sandfords Tauranga and they had some 15kg+ Albies in their display. Talking to the one guys out the back they apparently have caught heaps of that size in the last few days between Mayor and White so it may well be worth a look out the knolls this weekend with a mint forecast.

Looks like there may be a weather window for middle of next week so hoping it doesnt change so we can go have a crack behind mayor for some of those xxos albies.
Would love to have a crack at some puka and blue nose too but our sounder seems to only have a range of 200mtrs so I think that might be a bit hard when you cant see whats under you.
Could they come into that depth behind mayor at this time of year?

Cam dog keep an eye out for a 522 Bonito called Merci, we are heading down today for a crack behind the mercs now instead of Mayor as the water is definately warmer the further north you go.
Taking an 80W with me, like you say you never know what you might get Big smile

well we put in a solid effort and didnt see any signs of life in the deep water.Put the lures in at 100m and  went out to the 500m line then trolled south of mayor then out a bit deeper. lots of albatross and mollymawks but no tuna. trolled lures across to slipper on the way home the next day while watching 4 sainers working the areaAngry. nice weather tho

We had a good look behind Red merc on Tuesday, put lures in on the edge of the ammo dumping ground which is the 500mtr mark and headed out to the Mercury knoll 1000+ mtrs, best temp we had all day was 16.8, didnt see a thing apart from a lone seal at the knoll that seemed to be a bit lost.
Took the 80w with me and ran that all day in hope of a southern or big eye.
Was good to get out, shame the albies or southerns wernt around.
Still came home with scollies, Snapps & crays so wasnt a complete failure Smile

BA - I would get hold of a couple of Rapala CD14's or 11"s they are deadly on those Albies, also daisy chains are great as well. We make our own daisy chain, with a hexhead at the back and 3 or 4 three inch squid skirts spread about 18 inches apart held in place with a flattened half ounce sinker (the sinkers fit up inside the skirt nicely, a cheap and very effective daisy chain.

I am hoping to get out behind the Aldies tomorrow, weather is looking mint. Marligator do you run a daisy chain in front of each lure?

Posted By: Marligator
Date Posted: 09 Sep 2011 at 6:34pm
Dave, No we typically would run one daisy chain, and another single lure on the long lures and two rapalas short. With the daisy chain I talked about above the hook is in the hexhead, with the diasy chain it is good to use a heavier metal type lure (the one with the hook in it) which runs just below the surface.

Typically we use 4, 6 or 8 kg line, but last year tried 3 kg and will do again this year if they turn up and it is calm enough. I do not believe you need to go any heavier than 8 kg for any of the albies we get here and we have got them up around 20 kg and on 6 or 8 kg line they never take more than about 15 minutes. 3 and 4 kg is a different proposition, they will take much longer, the 12.2 kg one I got on 3 last year took 3 hours but that was the most stubborn fish I have seen.

The other thing is that if you are in a small boat I suggest that you only use 3 and 4 if it is really calm, otherwise the wind will blow you off the fish as the fight is straight up and down for most of the fight and on such light line it is very difficult to dictate to the fish once it is settled.

Posted By: fitty
Date Posted: 09 Sep 2011 at 6:40pm
Marligator and I generally fishing line weight 6kg or less.Rapalas are run without a daisy chain set up.Hexheads are usually run with a few plastic squids in front. When you time it right and they are pushing bait to the surface they tend to go for most types of lures. It was reasonably common to have hits on all lures in the spread(up to 4 lines)!!With ultralight line(3 or 4kg) we would only have two lines in the water. Hope this helps.

Slayer went wide last friday behind Mayor for zilch, even the snappa fishing was crap he tells me,  they stayed overnight at mayor and all the boys came home with was 4 snapps and 2 teras. long long way for not much. Still big ups for putting in the miles and giving it a go.

They are there alright, but statistics say the albacore longline catch more around the length of day 14hrs

Iam only going on what I have read. full moon is around that time as well, 17.5 c out there behind the knights.

I suppose try and get al the favorable conditions linening up, and give it a go. Never know if a YFT or Big Eye jump on your line eh.
