For some unknown reason I wondered why Anchorite Rock in the Hauraki Gulf is named Anchorite.

Googling it revealed that a British submarine hit the rock on the 3rd October 1960. The rock was unchartered, but came to within 16metres of the surface. As the submarines name was Anchorite, the rock was named after it.

The guys in the submarine must have wondered what the hell they hit.

Be interesting to know if any of the local fishermen, knew of the rocks's existance before the submarine came along and tried to move it.

Was told that trawlers knew it existed but their was nothing on charts
until after the sub hit it.
