hey guys i just got this off trademe iv got know idea ho to use it but il figure that out later im just wondering is there any bait fish out there that you are not aloud to catch using this method ?

No rules as far as I'm aware of, used to own one. Takes a while to get the hang of it... ------------- A king on the bricks is worth 5 in a boat. |

They're heaps of fun, Kadin, just start out practicing on the lawn or beach till you get the knack. If you practice in the water you'll end up saturated.
Unfortunately you're not allowed to catch grey mullet with any net with a small mesh size (from memory, 12cm or so when the mesh is stretched to make a narrow diamond shape. This is a damn shame, as greys are very easy to get in a throw net. They seem to think the descending net is cover, and dive under it as it descends.
I've caught a heap of mullet over the years, as well as a flounder, piper, a squid and buckets of sprats (yellow eyed mullet). Also longtoms, a dirty great flathead and other tropical beasts in QLD. Never managed a yellowtail. Thrownets are most effective in shallow water, and I think mackerel might be a bit deep and a bit quick.
I found out about the illegality of using small meshed nets for greys about 2 years ago and have since stopped netting them. I emailed MAF who confirmed that it's a no-no, although they agreed with me that it seemed illogical for this method. It's meant to protect juveniles from getting caught in gill nets.

yeah i'd agree that they should make an exception for throw nets,they are much more targeted than drag/set nets so juveniles are avoided from the start, I guess the rules aren't going to change without pressure for them to do it and i guess so few people use cast nets over here that there's not been enough people asking for a rule change... ..letters to the minister anyone?   although i've not used one i kind like the idea of them over other bait nets, you've gotta spot your targets and actually have the skill to get the net to spread out nicely over them rather than flop into a heap beside them, much more sporting haha! |
