Subject: Broadbill on Omaha Beach
Date Posted: 20 Aug 2008 at 10:09am
Whilst walking her newborn baby and dog on Omaha Beach yesterday, Janine King saw a large fish splashing around in the shallows.
Being a true Kiwi chick she took the dog's lead, waded into the tide and lassooed the fish by the tail and dragged it ashore. (You will note the dog lead around the tail)
The fish a broadbill, now resides in the freezer on ice waiting for partner Tony to deal with!

Fish was 2.13 metres long

Have just had stern words with the missus for not getting to it first. It's all her fault!
Pretty mind blowing that is (and such a tasty wee fish too ... broadie steaks on the barby).

Kezz - it certainly looks like the species known as the Anchorite Shallow Water Broadbill. Also known to frolic and gambol in the shallows during the cooler months.

Well having just returned from a 1 & 1/2hr round trip down the motorway and back, the thought has crossed my mind that If a Broadbill was so close into shore to get stranded, what reef systems inside of Barrier Little and Great could be worth targeting .
Also begs the question that drifiting through those work ups of Takatu with some nice sized livies would be a go ? !!!!

Checked up with IGFA...
"Leashes used to capture and/or secure fish shall be no more than 1200mm in length and the clip shall be of cheap chromed cast alloy. Colour of leash shall be blue..."
So the dog-leash broady record is safe this time.

I can clear up the mystery on how it got there guys. A couple of weeks ago while fishing with Redfinger he lost a BIG fish after a bit of a fight and I'm picking that after the scrap on the SP gear the broadbill was so tired it became disorientated and finally got caught in the shallows . Like Boulder said I don't know if I'd be so keen to jump in and grab one of these things. That is a top woman

Older and wiser Wetspot , haven't you seen that footage of the lady "speared" by the marlin while game fishing IN the boat from the states. Yes she did live but I learn from other people's mistakes , and I'm not a woosse But I do admire the lady for doing it because most people would have told us a story about "this big fish while a bill I saw on the beach" and we would all be thinking an 18 inch piper

No, that there is a perfect 10/10 mate.
Of course there is one other possible explanation.
As you may or may not be aware Ski left for the Barrier from Omaha (got a text this a.m to say he was at Colville safe and sound). As you will also be aware, Ski knows only two speeds: Full On and Stop. (In fact there are many here who would argue that he is permanently stuck on Go but we'll give him the benefit of the doubt).
People who have survived his hair raising journeys and can still speak talk about their lives flashing before their eyes as they turn seven shades of puce in sheer terror.
Now prior to a Barrier departure Ski, being the considerate mystical skipper that he is, likes to ensure that his crew are suitably prepared for the 'crossing over to the other side' they are about to endure. Experience has taught him that before he ties the crew in and throws the hammer down he needs to sedate them with an extra good helping of the Holy Vapours - applied reefer styles not unlike a Havanna cigar. This usually results in an increasingly weaving and irregular journey down the river to the harbour entrance while the medication is heavily administered, with the remnants of the C-Class log biffed over the side.
In all likelihood I suspect that the tide must have been going out and it carried the 'cigar' remnants out into the Bay whereupon it was snaffled up in passing by the hapless gladiator - later found beached in a stunned stupor in the shallows.
ERGO: It was Ski what done it for sure.

Same thing happened few years ago at Ngawi , two broad bills were seen swimming around in circles in the Bay , my mates son rowed out in their dingy grabbed one by the tail and hauled it ashore , it`s head mount is now on the bach wall . Local commercial fisherman reckon they feed on the Hoki of Kaikoura then get dissorientated and end up lost and exhausted?
