This storm seems to have passed thru reasonably quickly (Auck anyway)

Looking at that photo (thanks Dagwood), the seas are not REALLY high as things go from my point of view, but the pontoon is obviously having a hard time. So I agree it is silly not having a breakwater. In any case, how would you retrieve a boat with 1/10 that sea?

I went to BBYC marina (Half Moon Bay) yesterday to check my boat lines. In the marina. It was unpleasant but in an easterly no seas in the marina. Last year I broke the marina finger of the outside berth in a 50kn northerly which came straight in the entrance. That was fun. I spent 4hrs or so physically holding my boat off the pontoon. And just to exacerbate things, I'd removed all-but-one set of mast-rigging stays on my yacht for replacement. Every time it hit the finger, the mast bent. I looked straight up the mast once, but it was better not to <lol>

Even so, yesterday several launches (and yachts) were hitting their snubbers, which will eventually cause damage if left long enough. They should know that a storm makes lines stretch...

One launch rear-corner was pounding the marina woodwork. Trouble is, the snubber they relied on had blown-up with the wind direction. Good reason to put a screw or two at the bottom of those permanent snubbers.

Was not good in Whangamata yesterday, went down to the boat club for an ale and watch the fishing shows etc , get out of my car, 24ft launch by the wharf gets picked up and flipped on its head, 30fter beside it went right over as well but somehow managed to right itself.Would guess gusts up to 50-60knots
Will this was going on the power went off for good so quick beer before manager closed the joint.Angry Roof of a house 100m away was blowing across the neighbouring reserve as we left. Not good. Will take camera and get some photos to post later.
Weather is lots better this morningThumbs%20Up

Man we got away lightly last night, pretty quite down in Tauranga, had to trim a few trees, but got to watch the All Blacks get wiped all over the feild. The Comm centre was telling tales of woe in waihi-kopu area though, and someones house in Taupo caught fire, with the wind it ended up going up like a blowtorch

You had a quiet night then Swannie? Mine finished just a few hours ago, and I'll tell you what. We'll be cleaning up trees for the next few weeks I reacon.

I was up in a bucket last night trying to load bind a pohutukawa from splitting out in Parnell, Every time I got near the damn thing, the wind peaked and the tree was 3 - 4 metres away again. Parnell fire 'chief' had turned up mid process and commented something along the lines of "**** that, you're on your own" and went around the corner to the 5 car carport that was vertical against a house.

This tree is coming down today with or without our help.

Dagwood, I looked at lots of possible firewood loads for you, but the locals are really quick when they hear chainsaws. Even at midnight in Papatoetoe, I wonder if some of them know that Morton bay Figs down burn well, ( think rubber tree) . Hmm maybe time for some sleep.

Obie, I might try to Google them, but the most outstanding week of NZ weather maps ever was right around 10 April 1968, the date the Wahine sunk in Wellington harbour. From memory I think it got to the low 950's but, like I say, I'll see if I can't find it online somewhere.

Saturday I went to watch the Eagles play St Kilda at Subiaco. Funny game alright. I can't believe that in knowing only about two rules, even I could see that the umpire was blind. Still, home team won and that was good 'cos I was in the member's stand amid rabid fans having a very bad season.

Weather was shocking, I have a sunburnt face, wind got as high as 3 knots and it was a bitterly cold 24 deg. God, I so wish I was home seeing interesting weather!

Very impressive, Beagle. So 963hPa is the lowest so far.

It has taken 40 years to get within 5 hPa and I was safely still at school in South London in 1968

The records tumble.

Cape Reinga recorded 962.9hPa on Saturday which beats both Beagle's reference and the lowest pressure ever recorded on the North Island proper of 963 hPa in 1956 (or was it 1959?) at the time of Cyclone Ida.
