The world of fishing is full of clichés, some of which hold more truth than others. “Big bait, big fish!” “Never touch the drag while fighting a fish,” and the often repeated, “That’s why they call it fishing and not catching,” are just a few examples. While these sayings might have originated from moments of truth, the one that really piqued my interest is, “10% of the fishers catch 90% of the fish.” While the exact math might be debatable, there’s no denying that, season after season, the same captains and boats consistently deliver the best results.
As we gear up for another summer gamefishing season here in New Zealand, I thought it would be a great time to explore what makes these skippers so successful and what we can learn from them to improve our own gamefishing outcomes.
