So with my boat repairs underway have been getting prices for a new outboard.

My current outboard 2001 Yamaha 115 2 stroke w/ 600hrs on a 6m Circa

Yamaha 130 came back with 22775 fitted and a 3k trade in
Suzuki 140 was 20775 and a 6.5k trade.

At the moment Yamaha has some good finance 3.99%

I feel more inclined towards Yamaha for holding its value. But Suzuki is the cheaper option. I've got the cash but would finance 10k maybe

Anyone care to weigh in?

I don't think the Yamaha resale argument holds much value these days over a Suzuki. Certainly not the value of the difference in purchase price you give above. As for quality, I think it would be fair to say that Yamaha whilst leading the pack in old 2 stroke quality is just a mid field player in 4 strokes. Suzuki whilst having smaller market presence has had a fraction of the major design/quality issues that Yamaha have had. Personally I would have chosen the DF140 at even money. With that sort of discount over the Yamaha it is a no brainer for me.

Look at how Yamaha treated it's loyal buyers over a manufacturing fault when the exhausts started corroding and how the owners had to fork out to get them fixed themselves.

Suzuki's cheaper, will hold it's value just as much as the Yam and I think you will find in head to head tests it burns considerably less fuel as well.

I honestly don't see the point in buying anything other than Honda or Suzuki, they are streaks ahead of every other manufacturer.

Both are good brands, and I assume good motors. At 5k cheaper it's an easy choice.

Sounds like a very good deal for the Suzy, would be worth looking into the 150 Suzy price with that difference as it would suit a 6m Circa pretty well I would imagine

Yeah mate go the 150DF for a 6m boat exactly what I got on a Bonito622 and cant fault it. One thing  I have heard about the Yamaha same size engine and boat is the hole shot is not that great whereas the Suzuki is great as I think they have slightly more torque

Yamaha resale must be good if they are prepared to give you 6.5 k trade in.  Or they really want your business either way you cant lose.

Yeah the Mercury/Suzuki dealer said 6.5k (haven't workshop appraised it) whereas the Yamaha dealer said if all was in order 3k.

Suzuki finance was 12.95, it stil works out cheaper in the long run haha

I don't see the point in jumping to the 150, I mean the 115 2 stroke was plenty power for me boat. With 40kg heavier and more oil capacity the 150. The 140 seems the perfect the size

Hi Battlecat-I can't vouch for the Yamaha but I can for the Suk. I have a 140 on my 5.8 Senator and you're dead right on the weights between the 140 and 150. A lot more weight comparatively for not much more power. The 140 is a bulletproof unit and I think the most economical of all of the OB's of this size. Anyway it goes like a rocket on my boat and heaps of hole shot, you won't be disappointed. I'm a person that won't go near any motor (car or boat) that has a cam belt being a one-time mechanic and seeing the damage a broken cam belt can cause. I believe this new F130 has a cam belt whereas the Suk has an oil bath cam chain. Good luck on your choice.

I'd look at putting the motor on the mortgage or a personal loan from the bank. At current rates that's much less than 12%.

Wait couple of months till boat show and see what deals are on offer there. Also try an agent in different town, they all have different price structures and you may be surprised like myself.
Those that say it can't be done are being overtaken by those doing it.

Yeah I had thought about that, I like to buy local tho. These were field days specials from dargaville.

Either way it's gunna cost roughly the same with the different interest rates. Will ring Yamaha dealer and confirm their interest rate.

AN argument for the 150 is it has the same block as the 175 so it's not working very hard.  But it is extra weight and $.

Having owned a couple of 150 Yamaha 4 strokes, I would go for the Suzuki.

Both manufacturers have a history of leaving their owners with nasty bills for quality/design issues outside the warranty period. The big difference is that whilst you can go through many of the Yamaha models from F115 through to F350 and find examples of this (at least one leading to threats of class action in the US courts), the Suzuki cases that I am aware of have been limited to just a couple of models and year groups.

I am not enough of a gambler to buy another F series Yamaha. Having had 3 of them to look after, that is what my experience tells me buying a 4th would be. So far we are batting 66% in spending big money to sort out generic design/manufacturing issues of F series Yamahas. I don't know that Suzuki have a much better attitude, but they seem to have better design/quality control based on what has been happening in the real world.

The cost of owning an engine doesn't stop at writing the purchase cheque, and the cost of fixing some of the issues that Yamaha have had has been $1000's rather than $100's. Are the current series engines better than the last series? The dealers will tell you yes, but only time will tell the real story, as it did for the previous models.
