Heading down to Whitianga over Xmas.  Looking to dive Ohinau Island, Optio Bay, Marine Reserve and maybe the Merc's.  Any reports (viz, life etc) from these areas?

Ive dived around the Mercs and have been impressed with the range of dive that can be had around them... Diveing at Red Merc is totally different terain from say Green Merc. Vis... depends on weather but normally clears quickly. Quite a few Spanish lobsters down there and normally easy to get a meal of scollops

Hi Hicko
viz has been great lately but this weekends swell will kill that off for a few days.
If you fancy a tiki tour one day, cruise up to whangapoua and call in for a coffee (im at the store). will be in the middle of our busy period so won't be getting much diving in ,but i can still give you a nod in the right direction.
and from here you could go over the hill and see the mayor of waitete bay,
cheers
From the office of His Lordship

(Mayor of Whangapoua)
