Snapper are back in Puk Bay :)

Nice size snapper King Con! How deep do you fish?, I was at the 20 meter mark with water temp 16.5 degrees.

Anyone heading out tomorrow?

Ended up being pretty average...hit puk bay for 2 hours...4 gurnard and a plague of ky...tried kapiti and just got more ky and a lone blue cod. Then tried hunters but all the cod were undersized even though the conditions were perfect. Lots of sign but no bites. Still..plenty of fish for the smoker :)

The weather is looking awesome out there today. I can't get out today, but hopefully there are some good reports today.

Hi all - any advice on targeting snapper off pram beach? Just purchased a 3.5m dingy with a 30hp and have been out 3 times, have caught a few ky for the smoker 1 rat king (bit of fun) and more than my fair share of couta. Have tried the 40-50m water plus closer 20-30 m drifting between rau beach and pram boating club, no snaps as yet - any tips?

Hi - yes on both fronts, pretty basic finder though gives depth mainly. Yes have been burleying mainly surface will try to attach to anchor next time given current is pretty strong. However have been mainly drifting, any ideas on approach/spots much appreciated

If they're not showing on the sounder perhaps find a descent hole and burley back with the current. Holes and structure at the right depth seem to be the answer in most westcoast locations. Others maybe able to suggest the depth working for them on the sand but sounds like you need to keep prospecting as you have been doing. Maybe try a different burley to better match the feed? I generally start my burley at mid-water and then drop it to the bottom after some distribution. Good chance of loosing an anchor with the burley attached. Squid never seems to work too well for snaps around Wellington (not like up north) and always good to try fresh KY on ledger and strayline. Straylining is always good on the sand exp. if the fish are tentative and for the bigger snaps (be patient when they start playing with it).

Hi dont bother drifting , i believe you are running away from the fish, anchor over sand, any depth ie 18m , burly up , dosent need to be deep and use ledger rigs , be patient and when the sun sinks a bit lower in the sky, the snapper switch will be turned on, ps works for me and i aint a Matt Watson
