Cheap (and basic) camping options from the Department of Conservation.  There are some good coastal camp sites:

Also places like Motutara Farm (My summer holidays as a kid were spent camping on this farm when it was run by the father of the current owners)

And Bland Bay is good too:

Thank you everyone for your contribution to this thread.  I will come back and add more if necessary once I purchase plane tickets (then it's real).  I've joined some FB pages and also gleaning info there as well.
