I had trouble removing a recurve hook from a marlins mouth today.  It was caught in the corner but pretty well all the hook was inside the mouth.  I mucked around trying different options for a while before we managed to remove the hook by cutting some of the membrane inside the mouth.
 
In this situtation would we have been better to cut the line close to the hook and leave the hook in or muck around and cause the fish extra stress as we did?

cut it mate, its just a hook that will decay, in saying that I removed one the other day with simple pliars easy as, just need to wear em on ya for just that senario, no good looking for them when the heat is on

try using farming fence pliers they grip really well

geez mate you getting into more fish???
i made up a stainless tube with a mini horse shoe type end on it that slides over the hook shank and you just push down on it with trace in hand and it punches the hook out.
works really good for sharks and we used it on the stripy we got a while back at only the hook eye was exposed and the bugger bit my finger trying to get the hook out.
can post a pic if it helps.

Manley super pliers wil cut though most hooks. 90% of the billfish we release we just cut the line as close as possible but we are using eagle claw circles which rust at the slightest sniff of saltwater

Yeah, that's right-
 
Also, the lighter gauge Eagle Claw hooks can be straightened out once the tag goes in.
Get the wireman to hang on and they open up at about 57kg off the top of my head.
 
Get a bent hook back and nothing left behind in the fish.
