Yay thanks guys. That's been happening for a few weeks, very upsetting missing out on the yak TRs.

Good work as usual HY.
Hard luck BB , a few years ago I spent a week in Whitianga hitting every location I could up that eastern side for practically nothing. On my last day there my brother joined me with this $200 yak and slayed a 15lber with my spare Rod! I find that estern side harder than the West. Have been to the Rob Fort comp a couple time fishing those islands off papa aroha with great success, got my first 10lber there and thought I was top dog.

Looking like the boat this Saturday , could be a solo mission.

I went out Monday for a quick session, testing a new acid wrapped rod with an overhead reel. While getting used to it, something big hit my 30g lure and took off, peeling line for 10 seconds. I was worried about being spooled, so I adjusted the drag, which was a mistake, the knot at the lure broke...I think that's what happed. It might’ve been bitten off by a shark, but more likely it was my inexperience with drag settings. I’m guessing it was a kingfish, or snapper, something decent. The bay was full of 25cm kahawai schools and 5–6 orcas, likely hunting the kahawai.

Hello,

I've just started Kayak fishing, got my first kayak fishing setup last week.  Need some help with some local info, people going out/groups to join and what works best advice.  I live close to Onehunga/Hillsborough.

Thanks,

Good luck with your new yak  aaronnco , the forum member Banana Boat may have some local pointers for you.
I was out today along the East Coast Bays, and caught a range of fish with my 30g lure. I don't like Saturdays, there's too much boat wash, and those bl***y jet skis give me the s****, but I got a few fish, and got a workout going back in, paddling into 12 knot westerly squalls.
The water was clear close in, but very silty further out, like an underwater snowstorm, no idea what causes that?

Good work HY. Definitely summer when the jetski start zooming around.

I was out Sunday morning with a work mate who just brought a kayak. Been a few years since I had company at OP. Conditions were perfect but the fishing was tuff. Lots of little ones just nibbling at the softbaits, very frustrating. Kept 3 snaps at 35- 40 cm and a little trev. Was stoked with the trev as havnt caught one for at least a year. Mate managed 1 snap at 35cm so I gave him one of mine. Wind picked up a 9am so we paddled in.

Had some pan sized 31 and 32cm snappers today. Kayaking around Hillsborough and Onehunga area. Right on the edge of the two Red channel markers closest towards the grey sea scouts building, Hillsborough side. 5.2m deep. Had a weird hookup with the snapper in the pic. It wanted to go for both the flasher hooks.

Enough to take home for myself and family. Some extra catches.

A little breezy on the shore, but got out there with son yesterday. 3 snapper and a gurnard plus a lot of throw backs. Good bonding time on the water.

Where did you head out from to get to your spot ?
I haven't explored around your area that far up the harbour
Ive fished Hillsborough leaving from the boat ramp at Waikowhai, mid Jan, not sure if its still closed from the slips they have had in the past.

Hi Banana Boat,
The spot i have shown on the picture starts on the right red channel marker.  Easiest way for me to get to that channel marker is to paddle out towards Onehunga the grey aoetea seascouts building direction.

I use Taumanu Ramp to launch from.  Its free but the council shuts the gate at 9pm (in summer time). I think Waikowhai at the bottom&ramp is still closed. The council couldnt give me an answer when I called them today. I did try and go there about 1 month and half ago for a walk in November but it was closed then.

During change of tide high>low, i've noticed i will begin drifting towards Taylors bay.  There should be fish if you remain on the edge of the channel and allow the drift to take you. It should change from 2m to 5m-7m depending on how deep you drift into the channel.

Wondering if there were any brave souls here that have gotten out in the last week and a half.
I'm still very new to Kayak fishing and didn't want to chance it out in the Manukau harbour with the wind that was forecasted and experienced lately.

Any tips, what to look out for's and if there was an opportunity for anyone that went out, what would the advice be?

Cheers.

Hi Aaron.

I was out on the morning of the 29th at Orere Point. I follow every Forcast available and for me fishing in anything over 14knts is just unpleasant and I would rather stay home. There's always a weather window if your constantly checking and can get out at the drop of a hat. You may need to let a few people down and upset the wife every now and then but it's worth it.the more your out the more you'll learn. Have a crack on the east coast? You don't have to go far off shore and in some places there is no current to worry about.

The weather report for the 29th at OP was 5knts at 6am but increasing to 15knts by 9am. The report was wrong and there was absolutely no wind until 10am when we came off the water. Was slow but good fishing picking up 6 snaps

Hi aaronnco

For the Manukau, the best weather to kayak fish it is around 5kt with wind & tide the same way, be it incoming or outgoing & preferably, off shore direction.... even 5kt onshore can make it lumpy further out on the banks
You do not want wind against tide as this can create a nasty short chop, at times breaking, the Manukau is really good at doing this at any stage of the tide, even if you get the weather right to go out, at the start
We use "windy app" this will give you an indication based on wind direction for your area when you zoom in the maps, which you can plan a trip by
Also use coastguard, metservice & windfinder for weather reports.... sometimes they're all very different forecasts, which is bloody annoying

More important than all of the above, if you are new to kayak fishing as you say, I would suggest you learn how to "self rescue"
Tip yourself out of the kayak & get back on it again. There is a technique to self rescue & not as easy as it may sound

I went out this morning, it was sweet for yakking, there were a few baitballs and birds about. I brought two soft bait rods with me, a micro and a regular, but I kept catching Macs and Slimys on my micro gear, and they were the perfect size for live baits, I couldn't help myself, shark season or not. I put a 7/0 on my softbait rod and held on tight, the Slimys were smashed, they are a nice fish, but after a sleigh ride or two I was bitten off, hammerheads I'd guess.
I went back to softbaiting and picked up a few snapps,
then paddled back in against 12kt headwinds. My Bixpy conked out months ago, it was great against the wind, but I'm happy to see my paddle still works.

Hope you had a good session on the yak Hopkins.
It's a shame they haven't fixed the page issues on this forum, they've been notified and have acknowledged the problem...
The birds were diving all along the Bays today, they were after big schools of anchovies, they're tiny like whitebait, with small kahawai and macs underneath, I got a few of each.
The wind was squalling from 5kts to over 12, so it was nice then crap, nice, crap.
I trolled a kayak Nomad swimmer lure for an hour with no hits, so then bridle rigged a small mac, thinking there must be a kingie somewhere...but he got chomped by a Hammerhead, bugger, but I got some snaps soft baiting.

Thanks Banana boat, hope you're still getting after them.
I was out trolling for Kings yesterday, but all I got was wash from motor launches, and their evil splinter group the jet skis.
I hooked a string of four macs on one drop of my sabiki, but I gave up trolling after catching two hammerheads.
When drifting a while later, one of the meter plus models circled my yak for a few minutes, it must have liked my singing.
