Great TR HY that sounds like a special morning. I wonder if all that sign was snapper spawning? The snaps I caught last week were all males and ready to go if you no what I mean. Earlier than usual.

Not spawning yet . 18 degrees water temp is the magic number . Males always head inshore first. When you just start catching undersize inshore , that is when the bigger fish are at 20m spawning.

Nice one HY

I got my first snap with roe the week before, off Narrowneck (22nd Sept) the 2 others were male.
Also caught a bloody eel, which in my experience means that there's no other fish around.... & yup, no more fish for the rest of the sesh
There was huge currents that day. I watched a fala paddle against the current to his start point 2 times, then drift fast from Narrowneck to well past Cheltemham
Ive got a spot off Cheltenham & in big tides like that day, you need 6oz or more to get to the bottom...... not a good time to drift fish

I took the yak out this morning and could have caught my limit, but the fish are ready to spawn. I didn’t see any Kahawai or birds, though there’s still some life around. Yesterday, while biking at Piripriri Point (past Long Bay at the mouth of the Okura River), I spotted a big school of Kahawai with some Kingfish feeding on a bait ball about 100m offshore, great view from the cliffs. It’s a marine park, so no fishing, but it’s nice to see the life. A local swimmer mentioned two baby orcas followed him into waist-deep water at Campbell's last week.

Nice work HY. Don't know if I'd want two baby orcas following me ......

With a few weekends of bad weather reports that end up looking mint, I've lost all faith in just about every app.
So after checking 4 different weather sites! decided I was going regardless. The reported Easterly was a stiff southerly which I paddled straight into for 45mins before turning, dropping the drouge and casting. Was a slow morning with small rolling swell mixed with wind against tide chop, very unpleasant. Plenty of small fish coming in every 3rd cast or so with a few keepers to keep me intrested. A nasty wind with showers came through about 930am, so pulled the drouge and let it blow me home. Ended up with 6 so can't complain...... A good feed feed for me and my South Auckland family according to some politicians 😀 thanks NZF.

Nice one Hopkins, OP certainly is good to you aye

Got bloody skunked yesterday, sussing out new John Dory grounds off Tamaki dr
There was zero sign and buggar all else happening, few undersize and no bait fish.
I hunted around looking for any reefs further out for snaps, found some but no fish on them, then a short nasty chop happened after tide change

I went for a fish this morning off St Heliers, hard going again, fish would take baits, run off some line, then fall off without hooking up, this happened a few times
It was an unusual stray line sesh, the incoming tide was going one way and about half tide up, the current went in the opersite direction, like I was in a back eddy
An hr before high tide I finally got some fish in the bin... kept 4 kahawai, a trev and 1 snap 43cm, heaps of undersize going back

I wouldn’t call gurnard fishing at Campbells Bay heroic, but riding 1 meter + barrels with almost no idea of how to go about it, is some kind of action sport.
On the way out, after watching the surf for a bit, I made my move, slow like a walrus, and paddled into two of the day's biggest waves which broke over my head, quite invigorating it was.
The fishing was crap, still it was good to be out without much wind, but all the while I could hear the surf breaking, the damn pesky swell, so when I came back in I lashed my rods to the fish bag with my three gurnies, and made my move. About 50 meters from shore, a decent 1 metre barrel hit, so I edged and dug in like the Youtube videos say, and torpedoed the yak onto the sand, surfing is a piece of cake...
I let all the snaps go, and there were many, except for one unlucky guy who's going in a fish burger.

Well earned Fish Burger HY. I often read about the sets of waves at Cambells, I’ve always thought of it as a quaint bay as I’ve never seen the sets roll in. Mind you I have surfed at Milford many years ago!

Went out in the yak today, caught a few, and let a few go.
When the wind dropped, it was nice, but squalls made fishing and paddling tricky. Light soft baiting was not much chop, so I switched to a metal lure.
Foul hooked what looked like a wrasse: brown and purple with blue spots, around 30cm, and released it. The fish were hard to find so it was nice to catch anything. But
Campbell's was like a mill pond coming in, just how I like it.
 Next week’s forecast looks promising.

A few good fish there HY.
Went out a couple of bays north of you and found it hard.
Fish came on the bite in the last hour before low.
SB don’t work but had some old frozen kahawai that worked. Was living in caster bay for 4 months but had to move back to Torbay area. Campbells seems to fish better.

Good work Bullet, yakking is a workout with 15kt squalls and a paddle home into the wind. It's easier to anchor and fish with bait I suppose, but I just get a bigger kick out of drifting and flicking soft baits, it feels like something could happen hehe...but I might try bait next week, I've got a lump of kahawai left in the freezer. It could be the last chance to use it before the hammerheads arrive...

I tried old bait from the freezer today, and chummed heavily to use it up. I hooked something big for a 20 minute fight before it bit me off unseen, still landed  the usual fish for dinner.
There's a youtube clip of a guy catching a white pointer less than 1 km from the Taka boat ramp. I'm not a big fan of bait and burley on the yak, you're going to need a bigger boat...

Good stuff there HY

Just under 3hrs on the water off NN this afternoon 2.15-5pm
Went to my trev spot, a few undersize snaps went back, then got 2 trevs on fresh trev baits
Dropped down a sabiki for some fresh macks, ended up with 2 more trevs
I usually like the Hyabusa brand of sabiki, but none around the type I like.... next best were the wasabi brand size 14 = bloody good
It was pretty slow out there & took ages to get a snapper in the bin
About an hr before low tide (around 5ish) the current slowed right down, so I went for looksie to hopefully add more snaps to the bin.... not this time
I'm finding the last few times out on the water, that the fresh trev Ive bought from the fish shop has been a better bait than the mullet or kahawai that Ive bought, as not always I'm able to catch fresh baits on site, preferably yellowtail mackerel
Good day out in the end

I got out yesterday during the small window that opened, visibility was murky green, but not brown, still I couldn’t see my soft bait more than a meter down. Metal lures worked better dropping onto sign.
Last week, I had clear 3m visibility and better luck with soft baits. I didn’t spot any birds or boil ups on the way out, though a couple of small whitebait schools came by the the yak while out.
I headed back when the wind picked up to 15 knots, just  when the gannets had found something to dive on close in, I wanted to fish, but the fear of drowning got the better of me.

Great work HY, very consistent with the snaps and carrots.

I was out Sunday morning to OP with very little sleep and bugger all motivation. I was expecting a notherly about 9am, so was looking to get in and out quick. It just wasn't happening though, very few bites and the ones that connected were small. I went about 45mins without a single bite at one stage. 3rd trip out with no FF and it really had me thinking I better make an investment. Had 2 keepers in the bag when the northerly really picked up. Decided I would do one more drift in the hope for one or 2 more and just deal with the paddle. Picked up two more in quick succession so pulled the shoot and paddled straight into wind and tide for a good 45mins. It was a hard earned 4 snaps between 35cm- 38cm, good exercise and fresh fish though....... think I'll take the boat next time.

Had 3 nights at Papa Aroha, just up from Coromandel township with the east auckl kayak fishing club
15 anglers, plus partners and kids.... its really good to catch up with everyone & be away from our regular busy lives
Id been looking forwards to this trip away for ages.
Because of the westerly winds, the fishing destination for the day was Tuateawa (yesterday) just north of Kennedy bay on the eastern side of Coromandel

The last few times Ive fished Tuateawa, both early & late Nov has been really good fishing for everyone, with mixed species & decent fish kept
Well....... yesterday was completely poos, for a few of us
No sign on the way out, water temp was the expected 17deg & that was it for me. The only thing I could do was mark some decent looking structure for next time & spent 6hrs looking around for some action
To begin with, it felt totally unusual leaving my bait fishing gear behind, but lures do work better there
The best snap was caught on fresh kahawai baits.... oh well

God you've got some kit Banana Boat, your Coromandel trip sounded nice.
I was out today, it was hard fishing, there were a few small kahawai busting up after whitebait in the morning. I kept a few for the bait freezer, caught them on a Calico Candy micro softbait, using my light gear.
The snapps weren't biting, but I eventually got a few.
The next month is the toughest down here, but that suits me, still a tonic to get  out.
