Its good that your speaking out and looking for advice thats a great first step. You should read the book "retire young retire rich" In this book you will learn that its was last generations thinking of you need a high paying job/career to be rich. Its all about building positive cashflow! Once you start to earn more and work less there will be more time to dive or.......become a sparky like me and slack off when the suns out and use all your holiday and sick days at the hen.
Mate I don't know how old you are...not sure when they took spelling out of the corriculum either ![]()
Many people I know don't work out what they want to do untill they are 23 or more and I know plenty over 30 who are still trying to work it out.
The three most wealthy people I know left school in 5th form, go figure. But, school is awesome, the hardest decision you have to make is what you put on your form tomorrow!
Some good words there guys, and a really good question from jr Spearo to start it all off!
I agree it doesn't really matter what you do at school. I sorta wish I'd taken more languages and more biology, but I enjoyed what I did anyway. Do what interests you at school and ignore what will earn the most money. The Rich List is published each year and includes a huge variety of people who did pretty random things to get rich.
If we all could think of a way to make zillions whilst spearfishing we would be doing it. As DD says, being a scientific diver or kina/paua diver or working at NIWA, deep sea diver (danger pay), scuba instructor, dive shop owner, charter boat owner, underwater photography, etc is likely to provide a living, but will not make you filthy rich. Its great to see that you are thinking about your future. I studied both marine bio and money & finance at uni. A rather random mix I know but I enjoyed both a lot.
There is serious money to be made in ever industry as long as you do what you do well.
For example: you could sell tooth paste and become the next colgate, make vodka and become the next 42 below.
If you are driven to make serious wealth then working one day for yourself is a given….there are very few salaries out there that will make you huge wealth.
I truly believe that if the ocean is your passion then follow your dreams….but just remember there is far more to life then just $$$.
