I don't think cobia are caught in NZ waters but some of you may be familiar with them.

My mate (maybe the only one I have) caught a bass/puka on a lure trolling for YF a couple of days ago.

Tell your mate he's trolling his lures too deep.  Wink
I don't ever recall hearing of puka / bass being taken on the troll before.  Having said that I believe puka were caught surfcasting off the rocks a bit south of you around Porangahau, Herbertville and Akitio in the early days.

They certainly lived in the 30m zone in our reef a few decades ago.
But I thought that totally weird to get one out wide trolling lures. Looks like  a Zucker fruit salad thing - prime YF lure.
Will try and post a pic. My only doubt is wheteher the tail markings are right - but if it is not a puka, dunno what it may be.

I think it's a bass grouper Alan.  They and puka juveniles are pelagics prior to becoming demersals at around 600mm.

Well that expalins it. It was lost.
That Cobia would have been a beast to haul up from the bottom.
Are they any good to eat?

They are indeed good to eat.  Firm white flesh, slightly sweet which probably comes from them being known crab eaters.  I'm not sure whether a 79.6kg specimen would be good to eat though?
They go hard when hooked and are often mistaken for a shark until you get them close to the boat.  Anything over 20kg is considered a good fish.  This fish is just massive by comparison and all credit to the angler.  He was using 15kg line and a PE3 rated rod.

Edit: here is another link to a report from a USA sport fishing magazine.
