I don't particularly like Winston Peters or his politics, but I have to agree with everything he is quoted on in this article.

Especially this stuff at the end

Peters campaigned on stripping government departments of te reo Māori names, saying at the time it was “not an attack on the Māori language - it’s an attack on the elite virtue signallers who have hijacked language for their own socialist means”.

On the campaign trail, Peters said, “this conceited, conniving, cultural cabal doesn’t represent hard-working ordinary Māori - they only seek to use Māori to further their own agenda”.

Just wait for Minister of oceans/fisheries.Shane Jones starts undoing David Parker's work.

Almost guarantee he won't engage with advocacy groups

Yep, I doubt you will be seeing any new marine parks or conservatyion efforts anytime soon. He has been in this space before. Promised (pree election) a review of the fisheries. Got in as Minister. Never happened.

Nobody 'likes' Winston, but I'd love to have a beer with him.  He is one smart politician, IMO the best in the country. Would I vote for him? No fkn way! I'd still like to have a beer with him though Big smile

Yep agree with you Smudge, my partner years ago pumped petrol in Putaruru and one night she was on by herself and it was really busy and Winnie drove in and refused to pump his own petrol demanding that she did it, and when she said she couldn't as there were too many other cars to look after, he said don't you know who I am and she said no, well he told her, and she said I don't care who you are I am too busy to pump the fuel for you. Arrogant little man was her comment.

Have to say I do like that bit ":do you know who I am".
.Wonder if I started that  in a conversation, would it get me any preferences?
Of course, they wouldn't have a bloody clue who I am, sometimes I'm not sure either, but if it got me to the front of the que without me having to use my elbows, well, maybe worth a go.
Then again, I tend to be happier taking my place, so all that above, ain't really me..

If Winnie can help regain some sensibility in this fair land of ours, I'd be happy to have a beer with him, maybe even shout :-)

Is there anyone in the world who wouldn't be pissed off with someone saying "do you know who I am?" to them.  It's a phrase that instantly makes me dislike whoever says it.

You can have a beer with him any time of the day - I’ve met him a few times and each time he smelt like whisky haha and once was in Russel about 10am. He’s a bit of a laugh but about 10 inches tall. Takes you back when you first see him. He’s a character and does things his own way - respect him for that - vote no - and yes naming gov departments so 98% of people in NZ can read them is way better than 2% - was totally virtual signalling and defied common sense

I doubt he's a beer drinker. Nothing wrong with that of course. I doubt Chris Luxon is either. Pretty sure Marama Davidson is but I think I'll choose Winnie for the beer.

Pink gin if anything. More likely a non drinker which is ok. I doubt he is a fisherman though

Luxon doesn't drink.  He owns a Sealegs boat (posted a pic on FB not long ago)  - including rods ... I have heard the odd story from his Air NZ days that make me wonder about him. (but the stories could be embellished).

Peters is somewhat arrogant - the "don't you know who I am?" story lines up well with other things I have heard - but would be funny over a drink.

Jones - likes to use large words as he thinks they make him sound intelligent. I would struggle to deal with that over a beer.

Hipkins tries to come across as a bit of a nice guy but has been a full time politician since ... forever.  I would still have a beer with him.

Davidson - She could be OK for a beer or two. (but I would likely bail after that).

I've had a beer with Winston, we invited him to our leaner in a pub in Sydney one night. Good company and a good speaker or story teller at rugby luncheons
As for the others mentioned. I 'd rather drink alone.

If Winston asked me if I knew who he was, I'd say, yeah, BUT, do you know who I am?
