Hey guys I’m looking to upgrade to a tinny this summer but am hesitant to buy just any old one as I’ve heard they can be very tippy, is there any particular shape or length that is best?

All boats are compromises - and a large factor is your budget.

What sort of $$ do you have to spend and where are you looking to go?  What sort of fishing do you want to do?  What about family/kids stuff?

A mate had a Frewza 4.1m for a while and we spearfished out of it and he did a bit of soft baiting etc.  It worked well and was a good option price wise too.

I've now got one of these:
which is a completely different option (apart from both being aluminium pontoon boats).

I'm not sure what constitutes a "tinny" these days as everything is getting bigger, but if I was in the market for a small aluminium boat, I'd want something with pontoons for sure re: stability and floatation. I'd be less concerned about a good ride because it's not a boat I'd be taking over the horizon.

Yeah, I agree MB.  That's why I mentioned the Frewza first up. 

There are a number of other similar options from Stabicraft, Profile, Senator etc.  My mate did a fair bit of research when he bought the Frewza (new) and it was excellent bang for buck when compared to others - and it lived up to it. We could have two of us sitting on one pontoon with no problems (when at rest) and we got in and out of it a lot when moving between spots spearfishing.  It also had an OK ride (if not better than OK!) for it's size.

Cool guys! Unfortunately I don’t have much of a budget probably max 3 grand, I’ve been scouting around on marketplace and have seen some ok ones I just don’t know how stable/safe they are! Not like I’m going to go for miles anywhere only want to do a bit of fishing for dinner haha

Honestly, with that budget, I'd be looking at a kayak assuming you are reasonably fit. Kayak fishing is a hugely popular sport and the stealth and manoeuvrability of a kayak means that you can catch big fish close in plus no ongoing costs. I always felt safer on my kayak than a mate's 12 foot tinny!

Hard time of year to get a good deal on boats especially the cheaper end of the spectrum.

I have spent many years fishing from a 12ft something tinnies and have slowly over the last 10 years worked my way into a 571 Mclay. It is true that you get what you pay for but I also feel that I learnt some invaluable lessons aboard those boats that I wouldn't want to have learnt in my current rig. The great thing with boats is that you can always sell to upgrade next year and they tend to hold their value well.

I started my boat fishing career in an orange 2400 Smartwave with a 4HP and then to a 12ft Fyran with a 15hp and moved on to a Ramco Sport with a 25HP over a period of 5-6 years. Both Tinnies were purchase 2nd hand for around 3K and yes they leaked a little and the paint was scratched but I certainly had plenty of fun and fish from them both. 

If your worried about stability at rest you can get aftermarket stabilizer (Dolphin Brand) but as always you should operate your rig within its limitations. I must admit that the newer rigs with no rivets and 100% welded joins are great if you are a tad on the heavier side but in saying that they older hulls are very functional. I am a fan of the wider gunnels as I feel it adds another degree of strength and safety aboard the vessel.

Why  not inflatable??


These are stable.2adults 90kg each and 2 children aged 6 and 8 had one for 3 yrs ideally 2 adults 1 child but we found it stable.

I take MBs advice as well worth considering.
Having said that, my boating journey was very similar to FlawOne. Started with a small F glass dinghy, oars, then a small 4 HP Merc for it. This was mainly lake fishing. Then a 12 or 14 ft tinnie with 30 HP, manual start and tilt. Did heaps of fishing in it. Finally chnaged for elec start and tilt, then current Fyran 530. I had years of good fishing from those tinnies. A mate who I still fish with from all those years still has his 12 Ft tinnie and a 15 HP motor. He catches near as much as anyone else - bit more weather limited.
Stability, I have never had an issue with them (never had a pontoon boat). If you got the right buy -ie a genuine article, that had been well looked after, and not a heap of crap, you will get your $3ks worth of fishing for sure. Take your time looking, buying will prob better as winter approaches.

If you keep your eyes open you might pick up a Sea Nymph V13 for not much more money than you have, one of the best performing small boats in my opinion.

Mate - I would not discount what Kitno is offering because he lives in Papamoa. How much effort are you prepared to put in to finding the best option for you on a tight budget?
I drove from Hawkes Bay to Mangawhai heads to look at a likely boat. And turned it down. Had to o/night in a campground with no gear etc. Slept between 2 mattresses.
Finally found the right boat somewhere north of Akl.
