Yes Kitno I went out from Kaituna, I made the call to stay out after low at 1.40pm which made a long day and I copped the wind on the way home but was a tail wind.
Anyway good call as ended up with a special fish, I've been hoping for a 20lb snapper and 20kg king so nice to achieve one of those.
Being so shallow and reefy it was challenging getting that fish in as was fishing solo, I started the boat up and chased it while fighting it then the netting as well.
Huge relief to get it in the net.

That is one hell of a fish Greg and good on you for exercising your right as the angler to keep it. I haven't been out of the cut for a while. What is the depth like and how far either side of high tide is advisable?

Hi Coutta, I came in 2 hours after low on Saturday and would've like a bit more water, it was 0.6m picking the best channel I could see, which is the minimum for my boat. Coming into Kaituna when its like this I get onto a healthy plane and as I cross the bar trim the motor up to about 7-8 degrees on my gauges which helps, I get a bit of ventilation but stay on the plane. Going out across the cut for me is less forgiving depending on swell.
I have been applying the 2 hours each side of low tide for a long time and its pretty reliable, neap tides help especially if its 0.5 to 0.6 m low, always there's exceptions to any rule like this autumn when the river angle towards the Mount from all the easterlies.
I haven't been able to find the Maketu Coastguard cam for a while which is nice to check the day before around the lower tides, then there is the Ports A Buoy website for swell size before you go.
If you go mid tide with no swell its very safe, just pause to watch even tiny waves break and like the advert on TV about rips when swimming look for where the waves aren't breaking.

I don’t know about the harbour but it has been flat outside recently and is surprisingly clear. I was about 3 mile out yesterday. Got 5 snaps and a gurnard. Definitely getting easier as i was back home and cleaned up within 4.5 hours. Water temp was 15.4.

Over the Bowentown bar yesterday, with the young fella. Went for a few free dives looking for cray's in the shallows. That was hard work, as vis was terrible. Didn't find anything legal.

Then went softbaiting in 5m for nothing, so went out to 12m or so. Was nice and steady and came home with a few for a feed. Could've kept going but need an excuse to head out again in a few days. Nice fat fish too.

Went out today around 10:45 midway Motiti and the Mount in 30 metres.  Beautiful day but with hardly anything on the sounder, no work ups and no birds.  Moved around a few spots and caught just one panny in 3 hours.  Bit disappointing.

Went out this afternoon down in front of Matakana bank. Too much wind and swell to enjoy so headed back into harbour and fished just north of Hunters creek entrance as tide was going out and got four 45cm trevallys (dropped 4 others due to my incompetence with rod and net in hand)  and 1 45cm snapper. All caught on fishbites which was a nice experiment. Quite keen to use going forward and good to see nice fish in the harbour shallows already.

Thanks for reporting Rancher, good to hear fish being caught in the harbour, I was thinking of trying the entrance tomorrow so now I'm keen to give it a go.
I keep hearing about a spring run of snapper which happens about now but I only ever fish the harbour after xmas.

Grandson and I went out mid morning and did a drift with softbaits through the entrance with incoming tide, it was dead for us.
So such a nice day we drove around in front of Omanu beach and got 5 snaps, 35 to 40cm in 20m depth.
If you anchored with burley I would say it would be a good session as they were spread out everywhere.
A mate of mine who fishes up the top of the harbour told me he has had two good sessions in the last week so they are in the harbour.
Twof the fish we got today had milt coming out of them.

Fished for 2 hrs in the entrance yesterday after lunch, drifting with softbaits on incoming tide and ended up with 6 snapper.
Fish were in good condition and size, 3 around 50cm so very happy with that.
Conditions were good with super small tides so could fish any stage of the tide
Went in my dinghy and launched out of Pilot bay making for cheap and easy fishing, better results than some trips outside in my 6m boat

Left Sulphur Point ramp at 6am yesterday and went outside up Matakana past the banks.

Parked in 14.5m dropped the burley and had 3 35cm snaps, 3 big kahawai and a large trev in the bin by 8am.

Headed in to look for kings on the flats with the fly rod, no luck on that front.
Simon's situation was grave so he used gravy.

Went 10 days ago off the scallop beds, then out to the 40 meter mark then down midway to to Motiti  and back to the entrance for not even a bite.  Just wondering whether the harbour is the place to fish at the moment because the water is still too cold or whether I just struck a bad day.
