Yes Kitno I went out from Kaituna, I made the call to stay out after low at 1.40pm which made a long day and I copped the wind on the way home but was a tail wind.
Anyway good call as ended up with a special fish, I've been hoping for a 20lb snapper and 20kg king so nice to achieve one of those.
Being so shallow and reefy it was challenging getting that fish in as was fishing solo, I started the boat up and chased it while fighting it then the netting as well.
Huge relief to get it in the net.

That is one hell of a fish Greg and good on you for exercising your right as the angler to keep it. I haven't been out of the cut for a while. What is the depth like and how far either side of high tide is advisable?

Hi Coutta, I came in 2 hours after low on Saturday and would've like a bit more water, it was 0.6m picking the best channel I could see, which is the minimum for my boat. Coming into Kaituna when its like this I get onto a healthy plane and as I cross the bar trim the motor up to about 7-8 degrees on my gauges which helps, I get a bit of ventilation but stay on the plane. Going out across the cut for me is less forgiving depending on swell.
I have been applying the 2 hours each side of low tide for a long time and its pretty reliable, neap tides help especially if its 0.5 to 0.6 m low, always there's exceptions to any rule like this autumn when the river angle towards the Mount from all the easterlies.
I haven't been able to find the Maketu Coastguard cam for a while which is nice to check the day before around the lower tides, then there is the Ports A Buoy website for swell size before you go.
If you go mid tide with no swell its very safe, just pause to watch even tiny waves break and like the advert on TV about rips when swimming look for where the waves aren't breaking.
