Nice day out Sunday. Weather played ball until mid-late afternoon.
Scallops there at Motiti and in good nick but had to hunt for them.
Kingis mouths firmly closed when it comes to jigging - just a rat and some snakes - expensive exercise with a few jigs lost.
If you think you can do something, or you think you can't - you are probably right

Hi Just Chips
If you can launch in the harbour try spinning around marker poles for kingies / kahawai
Use a small spinner / lure
Dont cast in front of the pole always behind so the current takes the lure away from the pole and you don't get snagged
Let us know how you get on
Cheers

Another nice day on the water yesterday.
Managed a good bag of terakihi and snapper out behind Motiti.
What was good to see was kahawai schools everywhere, so good signs that the food chain is there for summer coming up!

Looking to head out on Wednesday, never caught Terakihi, anyone got any tips?

Also where are the kings holding at the moment? Astrolab? Looking to hunt some down with stickbaits.

 a  liteish tipped rod so u can feel the bites ,  lite braid  8 - 10- 15- 20lb  lite flro leader  15 - 20lb with 2 hooks 1 or 2 /0 hooks  bottom dropper with hook leavel with the sinnker  5oz to 8 oz i like 6oz ,

small strip baits  no more that a 1/4 inch wide tapering to a point and about an inch or so  long  or use pipes is best, squid strips are ok

2 dollar shop rigs work ok to

Calcal - go into Decoro's and get some of Uncles Terakihi  rigs which have tiny little recurve hooks they are deadly, all I use for bait is small bits of squid, skippy, pipi or slimey mackeral. Also I just use my soft bait outfits even in 70m of water, with these small hooks as soon as you feel a bite just lift the rod (not a jerk just a firm lift) and 9/10 times you will hook them nicely in the corner of the mouth. Can even just leave them in the rod holder and they hook themselves.

Keen to hear any feedback to Calcals question on kingis.

I have struggled to find any lately - or they are just not hungry.
Also suspect that its the wrong time of year to be jigging for them.
Any thoughts out there?

in regards to kings i'm pretty sure it is approaching the time of year when in years gone by boats have jigged 100+ in a day both at mayor and at the aldermans.
