I've been going out to around the 42m mark, out the entrance, passing A bouy on my left. I seem to be doing best early morning. By about 9:00 it dies off (or I've run out of patience). Recently there have been kahawai schools to chase around on my way back in. I would only average a couple of snapper and a couple of kahawai each time. I am certainly not nailing it, but it is more than enough for a feed or two.

Are you seeing action on the sounder when you are out there?  I have found it pretty bare and no birds working.  However putting into the water at around 9:30 I may be going out too late

I have found it harder than normal this winter and even had a few trips with nothing to show for it. There are times when I see a lot on the sounder, but no fish biting, which is annoying. I usually just drift, I do throw a berley pot down with a couple of dive weights in it (along with some scraps). It slows my drift speed as well. The work ups have been quite small and isolated, certainly not the big workups like on TV/Youtube and seem to disapper by 9:30-10:00ish which is when I head in. There are quite a few little reefs behind Rabbit that other people frequent which would be closer. For me, part of the appeal is getting away from everyone else.

I understand your desire to get away from the crowd.  I too like the solitude but this year especially has been hard going.  It seems that when the fish are biting most people get a decent haul, but I have found plenty of people at the ramp who have struck out.  My usual spots have given up slim pickings

I also found this winter mostly challenging, somedays working hard to get a feed, I would try fishing on sand, shallow and deep reef just getting the odd fish.
Things got a better in whitebait season and lately have tried to stay in the harbour for the spring run of snapper with some success.
Like Barafat and BR1 I enjoy fishing outside more, easier to find your own space and you do get to see some weird and wonderful things.
With Dec. and Jan. approaching snapper outside for me is tough and then there is the milky flesh thing.
Its a good time to try for kingfish, maybe Tarakihi are still around.

Kayak fisher fishing the shallows here, usually in the harbour. I am yet to catch a milky flesh snapper (touch wood). I've heard it's particularly bad in the thames/coromandel area. Curious to know how often others are encountering it in the bay of plenty?

For me the next couple of months is when I catch the milky flesh fish, maybe 1/3 of the catch on a bad day and they are mostly skinny.
Also caught trevalli like this, not so common though.
I'm trying to focus on how fat the fish is looking down on it as much as length now to avoid keeping them.
To me they taste fine.

Thanks for that info C N.  My friend does very well up the harbour in very shallow water sometimes in only about a meter of water, but he is in a kayak and uses stealth to his advantage

10 days ago fishing up harbor in shallows we did good.  Tho the sizes were down a bit, the condition was  pretty good - no whiteys. Last  night, back to the same spot a much better spread of sizes BUT all were on the pale side and a couple were definitely white. Even the fillets with good color were soft / floppy and a couple fell apart. What a difference a little over a week makes. From years of harbor experience I flag snapper fishing from now til the beginning of Feb tho this year an experimental trip in the last week of Jan was OK.

I fished the entrance today from late morning for a couple of hours, perfect conditions with small tides so current wasnt too strong, not much boat traffic either.
Fishing was slow for me but got better the second hour, ended up with 7 snapper in the 35 to 45cm range.
The first drift I did hooked a decent fish which at first thought trevalli, then half way up thought maybe snapper but when I saw it wasn't sure what it was, I'm pretty sure its a blue moki, beautiful looking fish 63cm long.
Made the call to release it, another great fishing memory.

Well that's a cool catch, I've never caught one but from what I've seen of fish pics my call is a blue moki.

Went straight out the entrance to about the 32m mark today. Two good snaps and a gurnard, not my best effort but better than nothing. No kahawai to be seen. Saw the Fishers officers at the ramp. They did say that a lot of people are finding it a bit hard at the moment, and that they will out a lot more over summer. That second part is good news. Last summer I met some who were patroling on the water and doing random boat searches, I thought that was a pretty good idea too.

Had my young grandson out on Tues 19th. Went up to within a few ks of Bowentown in around 50 ft of water. Eleven snapper to 44cm, a couple of trevally and a big kahawai. Most were on dropper rigs down near the burly pot but also some on straylines out the back. I let a mate know we were getting a few and he came up from around Karewa. He got half a dozen with two aroung the 8lb mark. When cleaning, a few had flesh a bit pale but not milky.I'll just ask the question, when others take out kids or grandkids do you actually get to wind in a fish? I don't seem to, I just drive the boat and pay the bills.
