I haven't got much to add to this thread as I haven't fished Tauranga for quite some time. But a friend caught a chunky snapper in the harbour last week.
The one thing I must add though.
Measure your fish properly!!!

Went out today, was a suprise to find Top Catch all closed up. For a change, I was actually going to spend some money too. Great morning chasing kahawai schools out around the 35m mark. Four kahawai two snapper and a trevally made it aboard. Lost a fish right at the boat which looked a bit like a skippy, but I wasn't paying attention enough to confirm that. Seems a bit odd at this time of the year so maybe I was wrong.

Was out today as well.  Went as far out as Pudney with only an undersized snapper to show.  Came in to the 25 - 35 meter mark and not a bite.  Plenty of similar reports from the boat ramp as well.  The Maori calendar said it would be a poor day and it was

Blue Mackerel, schools of them out there at the moment, we got a triple hook up on them and the one I landed was knocking on 50cm.   Another one did as yours and departed while boatside.

Another excellent day for fishing today weatherwise, third weekend in a row.
I have struggled the last few weeks finding snapper and when I do they are mosly small, my Minn Kota is in the repair shop so havent tried for Tarakihi.
Todays fishing was better, had a slow start fishing around the knoll so drove to the other end of Motiti and eventually found some snaps in around 30m.
The last couple of hours were pretty good, good to have the current coming from whakatane, havent had that for a while.
Conditions were so good it was hard to leave.

Interesting strx7, it probably depends what side of structure we are fishing, this year I seem to have got more current from the north or lately lack of current.
Open sand fishing I'm not sure what works best

Went out about 6:00 this morning, ramp was quiter than I expected. Been a few good weeks in a row so maybe everyone has managed to get recently. Came home about 9:30. The ifshing had gone flat, the wind started to pick up and there were no workups around. Three snapper is more than enough for dinner anyway.

Three snaps is way better than a skunking bigred, I nearly had a crack yesterday but chickened out.
Water is at its coldest now and its a bit hit and miss, I see the Papamoa kayak boys on their forum struggled yesterday

I did a long day fishing Motiti yesterday and again fishing was slow for me, but weather was nice although got windy in the afternoon.
I ended up with 7 snapper using softbaits, mostly around 40 cm but got a nice surprise late in the day when I caught a 20 lber in 7m at the Knoll.
I kept it as its the first one I've caught and wanted to weigh it more accurately on the land.
Ended up 11.5 kg at 82cm long which is heavy for that length, very stoked.
I had 15lb Tasline braid with 20lb fluro and a 7" new penny Zman on 3/8 jighead.
