Not been out fishing for a while. Tried last night but........didn't get far. Has anybody got any ideas why my 150hp Yamaha will only rev to about 3200 rpm then sounds like it's gunna die. Fuel is not that old so don't think it that. Stuffed up my hole night.

2 c n back could either be dirty carbs expecially if the boat has sat for a bit, or you could possibly have a break down in either the spark plugs or leads, ignition faults can be a bugger to find as they only tend to show up under load ! How long has it been since the plugs and leads have been replaced? Do you have a fuel filter in your line has this also been checked cleaned or replaced as a partially blocked filter can be problematic also ! Hope this gives you some where to start with, happy and safe boating out there guys and girls

Would be a good idea to completely drain a fuel tank, then replace with fresh fuel. Water in fuel can sit in the bottom of the carbs performing OK at low revs but once demand is increased is sucked up into the mix.

Worth a try anyway as minimal cost involved as can use old fuel in a vehicle or mower etc.

Is there any chance the existing fuel came from Gull or any of the brands relatively high in ethanol content which dispenses water if left standing for even a comparatively short time. Hence the reason a notice in small print is stuck on their pumps advising their fuel is unsuitable for marine use.

Before I was aware of this I was filling my tanks at gull until I had to put the motor in for service because it was performing poorly & was appalled when they found about 3/4 litre of water in each of the tanks.
When you cry, feel pain or sadness, no one notices your sorrow .... BUT
fart just ONE time !!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Gazza. I never full up at gull, I've heard there fuel is no good for us as well. As for the water in the tank. I've looked at the water sep filter and there is not a drop of water in it. Quite clean as well. I also use Star tron enzyme fuel treatment. It's good for keeping fuel for longer and also it's supposed to break down water in fuel. The fuel in my tank is only a month old and it's got the treatment in it. Also says overdosing treatment not harmful.
( might mix it with my Jacks tonight )

Shot out to motiti saturday morning.   Undersized snapper were in plague proportions, even destroying large baits like piranha's.   Managed 1 keeper just under 40, a similar sized trev, 3 kings just above legal. then picked up 3 XOS kahawai on the way home on a quadruple strike.

Got a good feed on Saturday in 80ft NW of the Motiti Knoll.  Lots of under sized but enough good pannies to make it worthwhile.
Before that I dropped the pick on Brewers for some Golden Snapper.  Did OK but when I pulled it my grapnel was gone.  Shackle came undone.  A mate who was fishing not far from me had the same thing happen and he reckoned he'd done his up with pliers.
Coincidence or is there a ghost down there?

Thanks to the local gurus who sent me advice – thought I’d better post a report after our very pleasant family visit to your neck of the woods across last weekend.

Flounder

Though the tide didn’t seem ideal, with full to outgoing conditions, I tried spearing up the estuary one night near the place we stayed at, at Athenree. Though the habitat looked perfect, with lots of crabs on a firm mud bottom, I only saw two flounder. Got one nice one which I wounded fatally with the first stab (somehow went between the gill plate and the body and hit gristle, but must have also hit an organ/brain) and chased down when it took off and then finally went belly up. Lovely in the pan for lunch.

I didn’t see any baby flounder, which is not a good sign. Plenty of eels, yellow-eye mullet, etc.

Kauri Point wharf

It’s many years since I did proper wharf fishing, and I’d forgotten the types of old salts, weird gear and fishing styles you see in classic Kiwi wharf fishing. And the smell of baked on bait, decaying seaweed etc.

What a superb, and I would say, unique fishery you folk have on your doorstep. I couldn’t believe my eyes at the baitfish schools swarming around the entire structure, and the kingies boiling up every so often. The 3-year-old and I visited once for a recce, and once to fish. Despite being a week day, each time there were lots of anglers – with a rod in every rod holder. One group of new NZers was using a throw net to full effect, landing a teeming heap of massive jack macks, parore and other fish, filling their bin and also having livies on tap for their 12 or so rods. I failed to catch any livies on plain sabikis, and they wouldn’t bite pillie or squid either. Only fresh bait. Must be very well fed and seen every sabiki under the sun. So I chopped up an ailing piper I was given to catch some very lively macks.

I hooked two kingies on a slider rig on my VIP870 and big Baitrunner. One busted me off on something a long way straight out from the wharf (a log?), the other was under-sized but was fun to tangle with. Maybe 70cm? I tried a surface lure a few times and had one good follow, but no hits.

I tried the narrow jetty end closer to shore, but it was not the right spot for the youngster, so we went back to the wider end section.

The little fella (in his life jacket, but no rope as it was tricky to organise with all the anglers moving around) caught a tiny rock cod and something that looked like a small sweep. Pic below. But he was happy watching the action and was a real trooper despite the foreign environment.

We saw four kingies landed, one legal. Unfortunately, the anglers who hooked them let the baits be taken well down, and didn’t look after the fish when landed, and two of the three released went belly up as soon as they hit the water. What a sad waste.

The sea lettuce was a nightmare, seemed particularly bad on the outgoing tide. Huge clumps got stuck on everyone’s rigs. The piper some guys used were not in a good way after getting throttled by it, hence me going with maccies.

Anyway, a great little break with some fun fishing thrown in. Thanks again to the community for sharing info.

Yeah, sure is Dan.
I remember seeing a Big Angry Fish episode set in the shallow channel out from Athenree/Bowentown, and the deeper bit near the harbour entrance. Lots of current, just looks really fishy.
I think Milan was solo in the boat, and nailed a couple of nice fish.

That wharf at Kauri Pt is like a FAD, amazing bait attracting structure. With all the kingies charging in and out, the bait fish live a very nervous life!!

I think in the old days (1980s and earlier) Devonport wharf was a bit like that. In my intermediate school years, I fished there and people used to scoop net for whitebait, and catch kingies on piper baits.
Probably still do, occasionally, but Kauri Pt is an amazing fishery.

Then there's the ray riders for the flyfishos.

Went down nine mile reef ways, anchored off to the side of it in the sand 32m. Funny thing is I've been using the slider rigs with good success, they didn't work at all much. Best was son ledger rig doing all the damage, but strayline caught the biggest fish of the day...
Heaps of work ups and car whys around too....

I fished the harbour last night in the 20kt plus gusts. I wouldn't usually go out in that but had tickets for a harbour comp. Sitting sideways in a chop made things hard. The snaps were on the bite and managed a third place in comp.

Glad you're getting a few, Kitno.

FYI, after watching the amazing success of the guys throwing cast nets off Kauri Pt Wharf -  catching bucket loads of big mackerel, and also parore etc) - I was looking up cast netting on the forum and how to buy one.
But from what I've read on here about regulations for cast nets, it's actually illegal to catch jack mackerel, small kahawai, parore etc on the 2.5cm mesh cast nets. They are technically only allowed to catch yellow eyed mullet, piper and pillies (unless the regulations have changed).

Those guys are regulars at the wharf, apparently, and i saw another group on my recce day also using a throw net there, catching little maccies. It'd be interesting to hear what fisheries thinks of those tactics at Kauri Pt.

same regulation applies when using a baitfish drag net,  i have occasionally  got small kahawai amongst the yellow eyed mullet and piper i've been dragging the net for and have always made sure my first priority is releasing the kahawai as unharmed as possible.
