Was out at the weekend at coalpit dam near Naseby.  Quite a few 3 to 4 pound fish cruising the margins.  I was out for a walk and some picture taking mainly but I always have the spinning gear in the car.  Had a play for about 4 hours and got a couple of hits but no hook ups.  My question, as a very inexperienced trout fisherman, is are there any rules of thumb for lure selection?  What would you use on bright days, when the wind is blowing hard, murky water, etc - that sort of thing?  I may take another trip out next weekend they got me so curious.

Cheers

Gordon

Very often, the smaller the better. Small Veltics or a real favourite some of those rubber grub/fish with a small leadhead. These work really well in black or white if your on a river with whitebait. Use a small reel with 4-5 lb line. Light line lets you cast small lures well and you won't break it on a fish.

Green Bingo lures work well on the shallower/murkier Rotorua lakes - worth a try too.
