Im heading up to the top of the North Island to target kings on stickbaits 40-120g. On a bit of a budget and already have a Spinfisher VI 7500. Its rated for up to 65lb braid. Will it handle okay if I spool it with 80lb braid or will I get issues aside from less line? Using PE 6-8
 rod.

Or should I be looking at a new reel for the trip?

Cheers team!

I don't believe you will need to go above 65lb braid.

Cheers Keith. Reckon its worth respooling with 65lb or will 50lb with 80-100lb leader be okay?

Most braids break at over their specified spec. e.g. 50 lb powerpro breaks at an average of 60 lbs. So you can assume you are fishing a reasonable breaking strain with the existing 50lb. braid.

From memory, the world record kingi on line is 52kg caught on 15kg mono (here in Nz). So, if you set your drag to 1/3 to 1/2 of your braid breaking strain, your braid should be fine.
