I am looking for some small soft plastics (I guess 3 inch or less) that are a good match for whitebait and/or smelt for fishing in estuaries for searun trout

I did some searching on here and saw the basstrix flash trix baits mentioned. I then did some googling and found some nice ones but not available in NZ?

can anyone help out?
cheers in advance

The closest imitation I've seen would be the Berkley Powerbait 5cm Minnow Smelt.
Also, the "Dragon Lunatic" 7.5 cm with paddle tail comes close.

Will see if I can upload a pic

It depends on local regulations.

Have a look here as well. I brought a heap of larger size softys from here a while ago. Shipping sucked but still came out ahead by a large margin. Very good crowd to deal with. Informed me of my shipping charges and maximum allowed weight of what I ordered for package(4lb). Told them to top it up to limit, then confimed, and paid. Lots of their softys are bass fishing in 3inch odd sizes. plenty off other cr#p to look at as well.

great if Kaveman can help, good to support the Forum supporters...

But here's another option, little 2.5" Z Man paddle tails, very slim profile unlike some of the other minnows which to me look too fat for smelt - more like sprats. They also have a 3"in the same pattern. Will cost you about $20 in fast shipping, but Anglers Warehouse take the Aussie GST off (10%) which eliminates the exchange rate factor, and the significantly lower price than Z Mans in NZ makes a bulk buy worth it. Jackall and some of the other manufacturers make softies with eyes, but to my eyes that always looks a bit odd with a jighead in front. Rather have a plain body and stick eyes on the jighead to get the overall fish profile/dimensions right. if you're fishing below a ball sinker and a trace, one with eyes would make sense.

I got some of these Z Mans for trying at Lake Rotoiti, look great. I'm keen to try the Motor Oil for its UV factor as well as the more smelt-like colours.

While you're on the site, check out the finesse jigheads they have which are much more suited to trout fishing than most we can get here.
