My daughter asked for a knife sharpened for her birthday to sharpen her kitchen knives.  She wanted one of those where you just pull the knife through them to sharpen them.  But I've always been wary of these as I've seen some truly awful ones.  Does anyone have a recommendation for a basic knife sharpener that will do the job without wrecking the blades long term.  I was thinking something like this maybe  http://https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/home-living/kitchen/knives-boards/sharpeners/listing/4123084615

Easy quick sharpener, I bought one of these buggars - Sea Harvester Electric Knife Sharpener 220-230V AC
Expensive knives are a buggar to sharpen, getting the cuting edge angle done correctly.... this solves it

While I wouldn't buy one myself because I like sharpening knives on a stone, I think Bananas suggestion is probably the most practical for most people and eliminates a lot of room for error.  Be perfect for your daughter Kev, almost half the price of a Warthog and best of all it is convenient.  She would like that best. Warthog beats it IMO but I've used one of those and they do a semi decent job alright and I think it would be a better fit.

When I purchased a quality set of kitchen knives more than 25 years ago the advice I received from the specialist knife shop was not to let an electric knife sharpener anywhere near them. The reason given was that they remove too much metal with each sharpen.  I took their advice and purchased a Warthog.  I've replaced a few rods over time but it still works well.

Probably good advice 25yrs ago with what was probably around at that time
The electric sharpener above has 4 slots to do sharpening on, from rough as to fine
To be honest, it's hard to tell exactly how much of edge is taken off when using the sharpening tool, by the looks not very

I've seen a Warthog in use, an excellent piece of equipment.

i have the system you linked above, it does a good job, but isn't simple to setup (I use it maybe twice a year, if i really screwed up a knife). my go-to system is a spyderco sharpmaker. Absolutely worth it and simple to use. Things I use daily in the kitchen are a diy leather strop, soft(ish) cutting board and a proper steel rod. It's easier to maintain a sharp edge than let them go blunt and build up again…

I have the sea harvester electric sharpener. It does quick and easy sharpen, to a reasonable standard - and it does not remove much steel.

Another vote for the warthog, and if you really love her, then get the medium and fine stones as well. Brings the edge to a very clean longer lasting edge.

I got thoroughly tired of using all kinds of various, cheap, and nasty devices to sharpen my fishing knives, none of which worked worth a damn. So I took the plunge and bought myself the Scary-Sharp-NZ system.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbGoh8D_L0Q 
Yes, it was pricey, but as the saying goes, "there's no substitute for quality". And with knives, especially your best quality filleting knives, you want them sharpened to the highest degree possible, right?  
With that said, I've done all my knives to a razor sharp condition many months ago, and the jig is sitting idle in its box. So if anybody wants me to sharpen their knives for them, and are happy to deliver them to me, at my address, PM me for my details and it will be done.

Here's a thought:
If any of Auckland's boating, or fishing clubs, or even retail stores, fancy holding a knife sharpening evening sometime, I'd be happy to bring the jig along and show people what it's all about. 
I'd need a way to secure the jig to a suitable flat surface, either with screws or clamps, and because the stones need flushing with a 50% turps and isopropyl mixture to wash the metal particles off, a floor area where some spillage isn't going to matter. Either outdoors, or with towels on the floor would work. 

If it throws some new business Geoff's way all the better. The complete system cost me $590.00, and in my opinion, is worth every penny. 
(Just to be clear, I have no commercial association with Geoff, or his company, whatsoever). 

Your call guys....

Wow that's great Mac. I have 5 or 6 favourite knives that over the years have suffered a bit. I've lost my way on them and they need a bit of a reset Cry.  I have basic sharpening skills  but nothing flash. I can maintain an edge but these are beyond my abilities.

They are a Victory 22cm filleting knife that I can whip into shape if I try, a no brand that is every bit as good, a Swibo that has just seen too many misadventures, a Green River carbon steel knife that  remains my favourite after 40 years or so and a large carbon steel knife made for me as a gift that needs a decent edge. Let me know what you want to sort them out and I will drop them off. If you're keen I can arrange a knife sharpening  evening with our fishing club, could even tie it in for The Grunter Hunter on June 11.
